Authoritarian Green Glow In The Dark

There is new meaning to the term green energy in the wake of the quake in Japan.

It cannot be confirmed that global warming is increasing the scale of earthquake activity, at least not to every type of earthquake, nevertheless, yesterday there was talk of the Japan earthquake having been triggered by the effects of global warming.

The hypothesis is that as the polar ice melts, thereby causing the oceans to rise, as well as those oceans having less oxygen content, not to mention more oil and more garbage in them, they become more weighty to consequently put increasing pressure on the ocean bottom.

Since some of the ocean bottoms have tectonic plate fault zones, which already have tension on them, the added tension is said to increase the risk of triggering a quake.

Dredd Blog is not ready to buy into that hypothesis as having passed factual scrutiny in every scenario, however, it is certainly a mathematically real and undeniable hypothesis in the abstract.

The touchy part of the theory is knowing how much pressure is required to trigger, not cause, an earthquake event earlier than it otherwise would have happened; or to trigger one in cases where the quake would not have ever happened otherwise.

There are undoubtedly scenarios with compelling scientific support showing that the effects of global warming can trigger catastrophic events, such as the volcanic eruption in Iceland about a year ago.

You might want to recall that the effects of global warming and other pollution, in terms of affecting pressures in the earth's crust, was discussed in terms of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Dredd Blog series Is A New Age Of Pressure Upon Us?

One thing is certain, Nuclear Power Plants in Japan took a hit because some were built too close to the rising ocean, thereby suffering a hit from the tsunami as well as the quake itself.

The photo at the top of this thread shows an explosion described as follows:
An explosion at a nuclear power plant in northern Japan on Saturday blew the roof off one building, brought down walls and caused a radiation leak of unspecified proportions, Japanese officials said, after Friday’s huge earthquake caused critical failures in the plant’s cooling system.
(Japan Expands Evacuation). This "clean and safe" nuclear energy propaganda, like the "clean coal" propaganda, has the potential to get very nasty.

For example, Dredd Blog has quoted researchers who have said that Chernobyl in Russia caused about a million deaths around the world, but officialdom cannot handle the truth so they deny most of the damage done.

Now we see that Japanese officials have learned from MOMCOM's propaganda organ (amygdala) to tell lies in order to "keep the little people calm" during times when the underlying Jabber The Whut is shining though.

Since government went into the propaganda business whole hog, it is becoming less regulatory of things that simply must be regulated, and as a result there will be needless blood, misery, suffering, and death.

  1. CNN interviewed a nuclear catastrophe expert who said the Japan nuclear power-plant situation is at this moment, if it gets no worse, the third worse nuclear power catastrophe on record.

He says it could become number one quickly.

  3. The Last Great Race demonstrates true green energy. This year it's cold enough to even have snow to run on. Dee Dee arrived in eagle island at 3:33am, and half an hour later baker took off, heading for Kaltag, 65 miles up the Youkon. her arrival may have woken him. Just minutes ago, Schnuelle, Neff and Smyth barrelled out on each other's heels. They look to race to Kaltag.

This mode of transport used to be the way meds were delivered in this great frozen boondoggle, that the Wolf Killer can see the folks we stole this from for a few rubbles.

Indeed, with all the satalites and gps and other hitech aids, in order to follow this greenest of green races across the whitest of white landscapes under the most colourful sky displays ever one muse be able to masted stats, deduce speeds from behavior of individual contestants, to a degree that makes picking stocks a slam dunk.

A challenge: predict the winner before contsttents leave Kaltag.

Hints, actual speed of travel is posted on individual bios, speed between checkpoints does not calculated how much rest time on the trail, too speed vs rest is key if the team is expected to run the last day, teams ofter rest between checkpoints, so first in first out is meaningless to determine front runners, that being said, it is unlikely at this point for any not in the current top ten to win this. Bonus if you can list the top 5 finishers in order!

Yesterday's music video was super, today's, not so much.

PS: Let PETA concern itself with the animals affected by the fallout in Japan.

  4. This will certainly increase the already considerable resistance to nuclear power in the United States, likely making the support for nuclear power "radio active" in the 2012 political campaigns. Unfortunately, that will mean renewed support for "clean coal" in particular, as well as all the other fossil fuel based means of electrical generation. All of this in the face of an automobile industry that is increasingly gearing up toward "electric" vehicles, which are essentially just "coal powered" vehicles on a tether.

What does all this mean for the near term future? An acceleration in the generation of green house gases and noxious pollutants, as well as energy shortages and environmental degradation due to the energy industries' desperate efforts to bring increasingly hard to mine product to market, all the while maintaining the obscene profit margins to which they've become accustomed.

Quite a spot we find ourselves in here, in only 2011. One shudders to think where we'll be five, ten, fifteen years down the road as this degenerative process plays out. There simply ARE NO alternative energy sources out there that even remotely provide fossil fuels' bang for the energy buck, and even if one were to magically appear tomorrow, it would take years to bring to market on a large scale, and would likely be vehemently resisted by the current energy industries' interests as well.

The plain fact is, there are enormous profits in shortages, especially when the drug you're selling is the lynchpin for the entire first world economy, and indeed, the continued existence for most of the nearly 7 billion humans who have overrun the planet like a plague of fossil fuel consuming locusts. The results of the ensuing collision are predictable and almost universally bad. The wealth transfer that's been going on for the past 50 years or so is about to go into hyper-drive. The thrill ride will truly be one for the ages.

  5. Red Hare?,

"Let PETA concern itself with the animals affected by the fallout in Japan"

Do you have a chapter there in Alaska?

The Japanese in desperation trying to stop a meltdown pumped ocean water onto the reactor which contaminated the water. That water will flow back into the ocean. The Japanese current curves up into the Gulf of Alaska, so expect some glowing tides.

Also the wind from Japan and Russia gets up into your area now and then. That is how some of your graveyards have Chernobyl victims in them, and how they will likely also have Japan-wind victims too.

Read the Dredd Blog post linked in the article which you are commenting under.

That is if you care to find out that Chernobyl killed about a million people around the world, including some in Iditarod country.

It is a small world if you know what I mean Verne.

  6. disaffected,

"... that will mean renewed support for "clean coal" in particular, as well as all the other fossil fuel based means of electrical generation."

Of course "that" is stupid, but it never held them back yet.

Are you one of the two Sarah's pals a la 'drill baby drill'? ;)

  7. What does NISA know?

They say the core has melted down and the explosion was a result (because of Cesium & iodine in the atmosphere).

    Story here.

The core is "heading for China" ... oops ... heading for the USA or whomever is on the opposite side of the Onion ...

Perforating the crust is a mysterious "unknown unknown" as rummy would say.

  8. A hair trigger in a fault zone can result in quakes ... they stopped the fracking in Arkansas because it was causing earthquakes:

"The commission says there is likely a link between the wells and the earthquakes. There have been more than 800 quakes in the area in the past six months and a magnitude 4.7 quake – the strongest in Arkansas in 35 years – hit there Sunday."
