ASM Defends Science-Based Health Policy in Letter to Executive Branch

In response to a coordinated effort to discredit public health officials, ASM, the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) issued the following letter to Vice President Pence demonstrating support for public health officials who are prioritizing science-based public health strategies to address the COVID-19 pandemic​.


Dear Vice President Pence:

During a national public health emergency, it is vital that we lead with science and with the best data available. Our continued response to and successful recovery from the COVID-19 crisis depends on adherence to sound scientific and public health guidance from the experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, who have made the health and safety of the public the top priority.

As organizations representing thousands of researchers, public health professionals, health care providers and others serving in scientific and health care professional fields, we object to any attempt to cast doubt on science and sow mistrust for public health expertise, and to spread misinformation during this challenging time for all Americans. Such efforts not only put the health of our population in greater peril, but also undermine the work underway to move our country beyond the pandemic and return to normalcy.

SARS-CoV-2 is a novel virus and COVID-19 is a new condition with which we have no prior experience. As is the case with any new pathogen or disease, we are learning in real time. Public health and medicine are inherently dynamic fields that adapt as the science evolves. We have embarked on an unprecedented global effort to develop medical countermeasures and refine public health guidance, and as this work uncovers new knowledge, recommendations can and will change. By heeding the recommendations of those who are on the front lines of progress to combat this virus, we have the best chance at a successful outcome.

On The Origin Of The Home Of COVID-19 - 12

I. Background

In this series Dredd Blog has pointed out the "understudied" and "not well understood" aspects of "the home" of viruses in the sense of "the home" being "the host microbe" (see Fig. 1).

Strong circumstantial evidence has been provided to support the hypothesis.

As a result the industry that Dredd Blog hypothesizes as being the culprit has produced a frenzied media storm to divert the attention and the research.

The bulk of literature in the Commentariat insinuates by repetition that all viruses inhabit the zone outside of single-cell microbes, and have to break into (infect) single-cell microbes in order to be replicated.

In other words, the bias of the Commentariat often bends the scientific research to make it more 'palatable', so the fact of the majority of viruses being inside single cell microbes as symbionts (mutualist, commensal) is under-reported and/or misreported (A dynamic nomenclature proposal for SARS-CoV-2 lineages to assist genomic epidemiology).

There are many examples.

First, notice the "Abstract" of a paper which indicates, concerning viruses, that we are not at war with a universal enemy out to get us:
"Much attention has focused on commensal bacteria in health and disease, but the role of commensal viruses is understudied. Although metagenomic analysis shows that the intestine of healthy humans and animals harbors various commensal viruses and the dysbiosis of these viruses can be associated with inflammatory diseases, there is still a lack of causal data and underlying mechanisms to understand the physiological role of commensal viruses in intestinal homeostasis. In the present study, we show that commensal viruses are essential for the homeostasis of intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes ..."
(Nature, emphasis added). The commercial Commentariat influenced by advertising revenue, persists in making all viruses and bacteria out to be bad enemies ("the yellow peril", the "China virus").

That is not the complete picture, it is a cover up and/or a diversion, because it is not a true picture.

There is more substantial evidence for the Dredd Blog hypothesis:
"The coronavirus may have been lying dormant across the world until emerging under favourable environmental conditions, rather than originating in China, an expert has claimed.

Dr Tom Jefferson, from the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) at Oxford University, has pointed to a string of recent discoveries of the virus’s presence around the world before it emerged in Asia as growing evidence of its true origin as a global organism that was waiting for favourable conditions to finally emerge.

Traces of COVID-19 have been found in sewage samples from Spain, Italy and Brazil which pre-date its discovery in China. A preprint study, which has not been peer reviewed, claims to have found the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genomes in a Barcelona sewage sample from 12 March 2019."

The SARS-CoV-2 origin is not really known because of the bias built into the system:
"The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 in late 2019 and its subsequent global spread has led to millions of infections and substantial morbidity and mortality. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the clinical disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, can range from mild self-limiting disease to acute respiratory distress syndrome and death. The mechanisms underlying the spectrum of COVID-19 disease severity states, and the nature of protective immunity against COVID-19 currently remains unclear."
(Selective and cross-reaction). That paper assumes that the people they were testing (who had indications of some exposure to SARS-CoV-2, i.e. similar T-cell characteristics) had not been exposed.

That is a flawed assumption IMO (Italy’s sewage water shows SARS-CoV-2 present prior to reported outbreak in Wuhan, Coronavirus found in Paris sewage points to early warning system, How sewage could reveal true scale of coronavirus outbreak).

The hypothesis this series has been advancing is that any number of commensal viruses are inside single-cell microbes because that is their home (see Fig. 1).

When their single-celled home is invaded and destroyed by antibiotics or other toxins, the world of commensal viruses is upended, and they can then become pathogenic (kinda like PTSD for otherwise stable viruses).

The mechanism for this upsetting (dysbiosis) in the microbiome is the mass-production-of-food industry (i.e. the "mass slaughtering of cows, pigs, and chickens" industry).

Not content with selling the muscle and fat,  "the industry" exports offal to other countries where it is used as food for people and feed on fur bearing animal farms, etc. (On The Origin Of The Home Of COVID-19 - 11).

II. The Battlefield

So, Dredd Blog has focused on the mass-production-of-food industry as an integral part of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

There is scientific research supporting that hypothesis in recent published papers, for example from Nature magazine:
"Editorial Summary

Minor role for host genetics in shaping the microbiota

The composition of the human gut microbiome is determined by many factors. Eran Segal and colleagues performed an extensive statistical analysis of the largest metagenomics-sequenced human cohort so far to determine the contribution of host genotype to microbiome composition. Host genetics has only a minor influence on microbiome variability, which is more strongly associated with environmental factors such as diet. The authors propose a 'microbiome-association index' that describes the association of the microbiome with host phenotype. Combining this measurement with host genetic and environmental data improves the accuracy of predictions about several human metabolic traits, such as glucose and obesity traits."
...
"A wealth of evidence suggests that this incredibly diverse microbial community is regulated by host genetic factors, and more importantly, environmental and dietary factors (4–6)"."
(Environment dominates over host genetics in shaping human gut microbiota, Nature, emphasis added). The papers cited to in that Nature piece echo the science involved:
"Human gut microbiome composition is shaped by multiple factors but the relative contribution of host genetics remains elusive. Here we examine genotype and microbiome data from 1,046 healthy individuals with several distinct ancestral origins who share a relatively common environment, and demonstrate that the gut microbiome is not significantly associated with genetic ancestry, and that host genetics have a minor role in determining microbiome composition. We show that, by contrast, there are significant similarities in the compositions of the microbiomes of genetically unrelated individuals who share a household, and that over 20% of the inter-person microbiome variability is associated with factors related to diet, drugs and anthropometric measurements. We further demonstrate that microbiome data significantly improve the prediction accuracy for many human traits, such as glucose and obesity measures, compared to models that use only host genetic and environmental data. These results suggest that microbiome alterations aimed at improving clinical outcomes may be carried out across diverse genetic backgrounds."
(Nature, 2018, emphasis added). This is common knowledge in the field of Epigenetics (On The Origin of Genieology, The Uncertain Gene - 11).

So, the mass food producers (using an army of antibiotics and other chemicals) wage war on the gut and other microbiota that engenders dysbiosis, then they sell the offal, which in turn drives the ill gotten profits of "the industry" (and some portion of the "health industry" as well).

III. Appendices

I am providing links to previous appendices which highlight virus comparisons involving different geographical locations as well as as highlighting different species.

The thing to notice is the ~99% and ~100% matches in SARS-CoV-2 DNA/RNA in those various countries and species.

Remember as you view them that the species have a similar diet to the humans (e.g. cows, pigs, and poultry) as indicated previously (On The Origin Of The Home Of COVID-19 - 10).

IV. Closing Comments

Think about it.

Think about the Epigenetic diet of offal which the minks and other animals were fed to "grow" them for their fur.

Think about the people and animals who have 99-100% matching SARS-CoV-2 DNA/RNA in them.

Think about their diet.

Do the humans eat beef, pork, chicken that come from the mass-produced meat, and do the animals eat the offal of the beef, swine, and poultry?

We know that the workers who handle and eat the meats have the same SARS-CoV-2 DNA/RNA in them.

Think about it.

On The Origin Of The Home Of COVID-19 - 11

I. Where is Virology Today?

Concerning SARS-CoV-2, there are a lot of reasons why the origin of the virus is still unclear, and whether or not pets and livestock can be infected and transmit SARS-CoV-2 also remains unclear.

Even though these are important public safety issues, according to the powers that be, they are still considered to be unknown scientific questions (Journal of Virology).

II. Where Virology Used To Be

Once upon a time the medical world, in terms of Virology, was accursed by a bit of pseudo-science:
"Koch's postulates have played an important role in microbiology, yet they have major limitations. For example, Koch was well aware that in the case of cholera, the causal agent, Vibrio cholerae, could be found in both sick and healthy people, invalidating his first postulate. Furthermore, viral diseases were not yet discovered when Koch formulated his postulates, and there are many viruses that do not cause illness in all infected individuals, a requirement of the first postulate."
(Koch's postulates, emphasis added).  A falsified hypothesis was a controlling factor back in the day, so now "we have improved into what?" one must wonder.

III. Where Is Virology Going?

Over a century later Virology, as it relates to mammals, is still suffering:
"In 1999, P. Griffiths broached the concept of commensal viruses, concluding in the speculative editorial that ‘we should not exclude the possibility that commensal viruses may exist’. Where are we, almost 20 years later?"
(The concept of commensal viruses almost 20 years later). It is a good question with a less than 'good' answer:
"Much attention has focused on commensal bacteria in health and disease, but the role of commensal viruses is understudied. Although metagenomic analysis shows that the intestine of healthy humans and animals harbors various commensal viruses and the dysbiosis of these viruses can be associated with inflammatory diseases, there is still a lack of causal data and underlying mechanisms to understand the physiological role of commensal viruses in intestinal homeostasis."
(Nature, emphasis added). This lack of attention has an impact upon, among other things, enteric (intestinal) Virology:
"Viruses affect host physiology beyond causing acute disease, thereby giving rise to the concept that the virome is a component of the microbiome. However, the role of the enteric virome is understudied relative to the fast-paced research examining commensal bacteria in the intestine. In this article, I discuss our recent work on murine norovirus indicating that an animal virus in the intestine can provide many of the signals to the host that have been attributed to commensal bacteria. Our findings suggest that the surge in microbiome research should incorporate examination of the enteric virome."
(Expanding the Role of the Virome: Commensalism in the Gut). How such important issues still remain understudied after 120 years is perplexing.

IV. Who Does The Lack Of Sufficient Study Benefit?

I pointed out several factors in the previous post of this series as to why research is not done on the 'factory farming agriculture' industry.

One factor is that all too often research funding is supplied by "interested parties", so in that sense the reason for the dearth in critical research is not a great mystery (On The Origin Of The Home Of COVID-19 - 10).

In important respects, it should be noted, Virology concerning flora has not suffered as badly from Koch's Postulates as other sections of the discipline have:
"Virus ecology takes a different look at viruses, from the standpoint of how they affect their hosts׳ interactions with the environment. Using the framework of symbiotic relationships helps put the true nature of viruses into perspective. Plants clearly have a long history of relationships with viruses that have shaped their evolution."
(Plants, viruses and the environment: Ecology and mutualism). The host of a plant virus is traced to a single-cell microbe, but the host of a virus in the animal factory realm is traced to what is really a meta-host.

Yes, a cow, pig, or chicken, for example, are considered to be "the host" when mammalian viruses are discussed (I call them meta-hosts).

This distancing from the host cell of viruses carries on over into technological breakthroughs, so technological breakthroughs do not always mean public health breakthroughs:
"With the advent of the powerful and inexpensive next generation technologies for DNA sequencing, virus metagenomics has been rapidly expanding and transforming our understanding of virus diversity, ecology, evolution and taxonomy ... Although RNA viruses lag behind DNA viruses relative to the volume of the generated metagenomic data, substantial recent progress in this field challenges the existing concepts of RNA virus origins and evolutionary pathways. Thus, an attempt to re-evaluate these concepts appears to be timely."
(Metagenomics reshapes the concepts of RNA virus evolution by revealing extensive horizontal virus transfer). Again, as pointed out in the previous post of this series, big business and politics determine what to study and what not to (and how to use or not use what we have learned).

The warmongering psychology of the military ignores the reality that not all of the citizens of other nations are out to destroy us,  and the psychology of Virology ends up being a war upon all viruses:
"Although viruses are most often studied as pathogens, many are beneficial to their hosts, providing essential functions in some cases and conditionally beneficial functions in others. Beneficial viruses have been discovered in many different hosts, including bacteria, insects, plants, fungi and animals. How these beneficial interactions evolve is still a mystery in many cases but, as discussed in this Review, the mechanisms of these interactions are beginning to be understood in more detail."
(The good viruses: viral mutualistic symbioses). Fear and paranoia are not a good foundation for scientific research.

V. Appendices (Virus DNA/RNA)

The appendices to this post are high-percentage comparisons of virus nucleotide MT276327 and virus nucleotide MN997409 with a plethora of other virus nucleotides from different countries and USA states.

Not only that, the viruses compared to MT276327 & MN997409 were extracted from various mammals and humans from around the globe.

The comparisons are for: 1) genome length, 2) matching genome segments (10 element segments), and 3) nucleotide to nucleotide (Fig. 2 shows an example of typical nucleotide to nucleotide (the"ABC's" of ACGT's) comparison results).

I think that readers, as I was, will be astounded at the exactness and near exactness of one virus DNA/RNA to another even though they were extracted thousands of miles from one another in many cases (not to mention the human to animal comparisons).

VI. Where not to look for the home of SARS-CoV-2

The three videos below contain similar subject matter.

That is, they are either about hosts of viruses (single-cell microbes) or about viruses themselves.

Each one mentions antibiotics and the dangers of overuse.

They focus light on the dynamics of antibiotics killing the single-cell microbe hosts of viruses (causing the viruses to be cast out of their habitat to become like a space ship that gets lost in the great depths of space).

The bottom line is that the "home" of SARS-CoV-2 is the single-cell microbe or microbes continually killed by antibiotics.

VII. A Good Microbe's Death Means
The Emergence of Pathogenic Viruses

About six years I wrote:
We are also finding out that viruses and microbes are essential for human and other life forms:

(Viruses: Essential Agents of Life, at viii-ix; see also this). This we find out at a time when we are so paranoid about them that all we want to do is make war on them and quarantine those of us we think are the only ones exposed to them (Obola: Art Thou Dying Properly?).

VIII. Closing Comments

So what have we, Dredd Blog readers and I, learned in the past six years?

Putting the three videos together, I note that: 
(1) it takes a great number of pathogenic bacteria to mount a successful attack on us (Bonnie Bassler) and that the same reality goes for viruses, (2) we do not become sick until that happens (each person will tend to resist various quantities of pathogens, based on our individual immune system's capacity), (3) when we don't wear masks and subsequently pass pathogens to others, we do not pass the full amount it takes to cause the disease, but we add to the quantity (which may or may not add up to the critical number in that other person or persons), (4) the pathogens know when they have enough to do damage by way of communication (quorum sensing - bacteria; quorum sensing - viruses; see also this).
