The Germ Theory - of Government - 7

In this series we have been looking into the mysterious reality that government power seems to carry "germs" that promote tyranny (The Germ Theory - of Government - 6).

"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy." - James Madison

That has proven to be true after hundreds of years, if you consider the military NSA spying on the citizens of its own nation to be a form of tyranny and/or oppression; as well as their doing that spying on Americans in this land "in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy" (see e.g. The Queens of Stalingrad - 2, ACLU vs. Clapper, Alexander, Hagel, Holder, and Mueller, and Will The Military Become The Police - 3).

Yet, they were all out on "Independence Day" telling us how they have to protect us from foreign enemies (by spying on us far worse than those "foreign enemies" do to their citizens).

Let's face it, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, so our Constitution expresses a distrust of government (see e.g. The Constitution Is Quite A Medicine and Why Trial By Jury?).

Our jury trial laws and practices express an ancient understanding about those in power, which can be readily seen by the statistic that Twenty Seven Percent of U.S. Presidents have been slave owners:
Of the first five presidents, four owned slaves. All four of these owned slaves while they were president.

Of the next five presidents (#6-10), four owned slaves. Only two of them owned slaves while they were president.

Of the next five presidents (#11-15), two owned slaves. Both of these two owned slaves while they were president.

Of the next three presidents (#16-18) two owned slaves. neither of them owned slaves while serving as president.

The last president to own slaves while in office was the twelfth president, Zachary Taylor (1849-1850).

The last president to own slaves at all was the eighteenth president, Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1877).

So twelve of our presidents owned slaves and eight of them owned slaves while serving as president.
(U.S. Presidents Owned Slaves, 12/44 = 27%). We can hypothesize that, since far, far less than 1% of citizens owned slaves, freedom is more of a function of what the people want as individuals, such as their civil rights and their common good.

On the contrary, government officials in power are, in the eyes of our forefathers, those who are historically responsible for a loss of freedom and rights, and will continue to be so:
Experience has shown that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”

The mystery of why corruption keeps manifesting in the halls of government, in the seats of power, over centuries of time gives rise to Dredd Blog's "The Germ Theory of Government" (see e.g. The Insanity Virus, Hypothesis: Microbes Generate Toxins of Power - 6, and The Human Microbiome Congress).

It is not a universally accepted theory, nor has it been so in the past, but the expanded understanding in microbiology may change all that.

For example, once upon a time not so long ago, scientists and doctors taught, believed, and exclaimed that disease was caused by mysterious entities that just appeared out of nowhere:
The theory of diseases was highly influenced by ideas of an imbalance of the basic "four humours" in the body, a theory known as dyscrasia, for which the main treatment was bloodlettings ... the conventional wisdom [was] that diseases spread in the form of "bad air", also known as miasmas or vaguely as "unfavourable atmospheric-cosmic-terrestrial influences".
As accounts of the dramatic reduction in mortality rates in Vienna were being circulated throughout Europe, Semmelweis had reason to expect that the chlorine washings would be widely adopted, saving tens of thousands of lives. Early responses to his work also gave clear signs of coming trouble, however.
(Wikipedia, Semmelweis; see also What Is Pseudo Science?). Dr. Semmelweis was placed in an insane asylum because of his discovery, where he died of a germ-caused disease.

The internment of Dr. Semmelweis was done despite his saving hundreds of lives by practicing cleanliness in his clinics, and urging other doctors to wash their hands between patients.

We now know that germs are in fact the basis of infections, and that cleanliness in hospitals and clinics resists the spread of disease by germs.

Earlier in this series we hypothesized that science may someday discover that the spread of corruption in government circles that are inundated with power is also a function of toxins.

The Unanimous Declaration - 3

The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America

When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. --Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former systems of government. He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.

He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.

He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:

For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:

For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing taxes on us without our consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury:

For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses:

For abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies:

For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments:

For suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have we been wanting in attention to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, enemies in war, in peace friends.

We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and independent states; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace, contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do. Economic War Of The Pacific - 2

The ill fated W Direction, Dredd Blog's term for describing U.S. foreign policy, is pushing other nations into corners.

This mindless policy which began in earnest with the neoCon infested Bush II Administration, we have complained, has been perpetuated by the Obama Administration.

When nations are pushed so that their backs are up against a wall, and our policy affords them no leeway, they tend to take steps that are not in the interests of all concerned.

For example, one of the Bush II "diplomacy" ideas involved putting missiles into Poland, near the Russian border, while claiming they were to protect Europe from an Iranian missile attack.

Likewise, the Obama Administration, as a form of "diplomacy", is pushing Russia on its Syrian policy, which also impacts China since it also supports Syria and Iran.

This is leading to some potential challenges for future naval strategy:
China will join Russia later this week for its largest-ever naval drills with a foreign partner, underlining deepening ties between the former cold war rivals along with Beijing's desire for closer links with regional militaries.

China has long been a key customer for Russian military hardware, but only in the last decade have their militaries begun taking part in joint exercises.

China's defence ministry said on Tuesday that its navy would send four destroyers, two guided missile frigates and a support ship for the exercises, which start on Friday in the Sea of Japan and run until 12 July.

The ships departed on Monday from the port of Qingdao, where China's Northern Fleet is based, and headed for the rallying point in Peter the Great Bay near Vladivostok.

"This marks our navy's single biggest deployment of military force in a China-foreign joint exercise," the ministry said.
(China to Join Russia for Largest Naval Drills). Regular readers know that Dredd Blog has pointed out the inherent dangers involved with escalations in warmongering, jingoistic rhetoric (The Most Dangerous Moment in Recorded History).

But there is also a danger that economic impacts, which are not in American interests, could be an unintended consequence of senseless hubris in foreign policy:
“The 21st century will be a contest for supremacy in the Pacific because that’s where the growth will be,” Lee said. U.S. President Barack Obama, he said, must understand this.

“If you do not hold your ground in the Pacific you cannot be a world leader,” Lee said, “That’s number one.”

“Number two, to hold ground in the Pacific, you must not let your fiscal deficits and dollar come to grief,” he said.
(Economic War Of The Pacific). It does not appear that alienating two important powers then having them react negatively to American interests is a workable policy.

New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II - 5

Who is filling the oceans with garbage?
Regular readers know that Dredd Blog has been talking about the "garbage gyres", which are relatively unknown phenomena, located in the oceans.

And that Dredd Blog has been discussing them for years now.

On March 25, 2009 we posted Garbage Garbage Garbage about "that something" a lot of people were unaware of.

Following that post, Dredd Blog then began this current series with New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II on August 29, 2009, continuing to add posts to the list, then finally posting New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II - 4 recently; all of which continued the shocking story of what we are doing to our oceans.

These Dredd Blog posts have been popular because we are talking about oceans that we must have for life to survive on our home planet, the Earth.
Surfing Waves of Garbage

During the famed Americas Cup yacht races Dredd Blog continued the theme by pointing out the sad reality that those yachts had to sail through some of those garbage gyres (The Gyres, The America's Cup & Medals).

More recently, an expedition looked into effects of the phenomenon as it is impacting Alaska (Alaskan Beaches Blighted) while others have looked at the ocean bottom (Life on the Ocean Floor Garbage Patch).

Viva Egypt - 2

"Where can we get more of this stuff?"
I. Introduction

The first post of this Dredd Blog series --a discussion of Occupy Egypt --took place in January of 2011 (Viva Egypt).

Since then the dictator and puppet of MOMCOM, Hosni Mubarak, was dethroned and sentenced to prison.

Following the Egyptian Military's real or feigned alignment with the people, national elections were set forth as a remedy then eventually held, and the protests and anger subsided in Egypt.

Eventually a new Muslim president of Egypt (Mohammed Morsi) was put on stage by national elections, ostensibly to bring forth a government with an orientation toward the common good of the people (The Common Good).

The new president seems to have quickly become oppressive, so that short Egyptian moderate period of relative quiet has now gone by the wayside.

Millions of demonstrators have filled the streets of Egypt once again, demanding among other things, a new president (Guardian, BBC).

Everyone is now waiting to see if the Egyptian military will side with the people this time, or instead will attempt a brutal repression, as DHS did with the Occupy Movement here in the U.S. (The Empire Strikes Back - 6).

II. The Birth of Oil-Qaeda

The basis of current Middle Eastern displeasure, frustration, and foment has its roots in the embryonic formation and later birth of Oil-Qaeda (Oil-Qaeda: The Indictment, Oil-Qaeda: The Deadliest Parasite Of Civilization).

A birth conceived in the minds of Western Leaders, just after the turn of the 19th Century into the 20th Century, when leaders failed to see the long run big picture of Western Civilization becoming bound to that region (The Peak of Sanity - 3, A History of Oil Addiction - 4).

III. The Middle East Addiction

The West became bound to that region because of an unintended, unforeseen, deadly addiction that was motivated in part by a religious tenet of Western Religion, which, as will be seen just below, was a belief in "the Battle of Armageddon."

The "opiate of the people" helped lead to a deadly addiction of civilization to fossil fuels.

That addiction eventuality emerged from that era's decision to commit to fossil fuel petroleum in place of the fossil fuel coal:
Long before politicians mewled helplessly about the power of “Big Oil”, carbon-based fuels were shaping our very political, legal, intellectual, and physical structures.
For instance, the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was a pivotal moment in America’s strategic outlook. America, a global hegemon whose empire was weakening, seized the second largest oil deposits in the world as a way of preventing its economic and political decline.
The last declining global hegemon, Great Britain, also engaged in a brutal and highly controversial British occupation of Iraq, in the 1920s, pressed aggressively by the well-known British conservative, Winston Churchill.
From the moment he arrived at the Admiralty, a young man of destiny, Churchill started to prepare the fleet for the Battle of Armageddon he believed was inevitable.
Then, in 1911, the German Kaiser provoked the Agadir crisis ... Churchill went to the Admiralty and his outlook transformed. He was immediately confronted with the decisive question: to convert the navy from coal to oil ... the "fateful plunge" was made ... in April 1912 ... five oil-burning battleships were approved.
It was the Royal Navy which was the impetus for the development of the oil industry in Britain. The problem was supply and the security of that supply. Initially, the British government purchased shares in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, subsequently, British Petroleum [BP].
Then, to prevent further disruptions, Britain enmeshed itself ever more deeply in the Middle East, working to install new shahs in Iran and carve Iraq out of the collapsing Ottoman Empire.

Churchill fired the starting gun, but all of the Western powers joined the race to control Middle Eastern oil.
(The Universal Smedley - 2, emphasis added). Thus began the new Age of Petroleum Man, an age of resource wars, fueled intellectually with a toxic mix of religion:
The enemy aggressor is always pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism. We are always moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate our victims, while incidentally capturing their markets; to civilise savage and senile and paranoid peoples, while blundering accidentally into their oil wells.
(The Peak Of The Oil Wars - 7, quoting 1944 book). That age has now reached its peak or plateau, a time of anxiety as the drug becomes more and more difficult to find and produce.

IV. The Drug Is Finite

Now, as we begin to head down the backside slope into the valley of post petroleum man, MOMCOM offers rank propaganda (The Peak of The Oil Lies - 6).

But if all is so well, why is MOMCOM watching and spying on every citizen carefully (The Fog of Spying In The Fog of War)?

And if all is so well, why is MOMCOM talking about austerity (Why Is The Government Conditioning Us To Austerity?)?

All is so well that MOMCOM is also preparing for a time when millions of Americans take to the streets like the Egyptians have:
A new report by the U.S. Army War College talks about the possibility of Pentagon resources and troops being used should the economic crisis lead to civil unrest, such as protests against businesses and government or runs on beleaguered banks.

“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” said the War College report.

The study says economic collapse, terrorism and loss of legal order are among possible domestic shocks that might require military action within the U.S.

A cruise of the Internet via Google, Yahoo, or Bing, searching for "industrial complex" comes up with "military industrial complex" (a half-century old description), "prison-industrial complex", "corporate industrial complex", "intelligence industrial complex", and a host of others.

But no "oil" is generally included in those complex concepts.

Why are people conditioned to become unaware of the utter and complete complex addiction to oil?

V. Western Civilization Made Itself Out Of Finite Resources

Regular readers know that Dredd Blog has consistently tried to share an awareness of the fact that Western Civilization is made out of oil:
We can reveal some of what the MOMCOM empire is feeding the citizenry, what is in the bottle, and what is not:
Twinkies and their rocky ingredients were the subject of a 2007 book by Steve Ettlinger called “Twinkie, Deconstructed.” For research, Ettlinger interviewed bakers and even traveled below the Earth to see where Twinkie ingredients were mined. The dessert cakes contain sorbic acid, which is derived from natural gas. Some ingredients were found to come from the oil fields of China. Others came from phosphate mines in Idaho. So-called vitamins in the dessert come from petroleum.

(Products From Petroleum, emphasis added). Highlighted items are things you put in you or on you, but a close look at the items that are not highlighted will tell you MOMCOM is quite "next to you".

The "toothpaste" caught my eye, because it is the symbolic item used by some scholars & educators to point out to you that even government is handled and constructed like a Twinkie:
One of the most important comments on deceit, I think, was made by Adam Smith. He pointed out that a major goal of business is to deceive and oppress the public.

And one of the striking features of the modern period is the institutionalization of that process, so that we now have huge industries deceiving the public — and they're very conscious about it, the public relations industry. Interestingly, this developed in the freest countries—in Britain and the US—roughly around time of WWI, when it was recognized that enough freedom had been won that people could no longer be controlled by force. So modes of deception and manipulation had to be developed in order to keep them under control.

And by now these are huge industries. They not only dominate marketing of commodities, but they also control the political system. As anyone who watches a US election knows, it's marketing. It's the same techniques that are used to market toothpaste.
(Noam Chomsky, emphasis added). This election cycle MOMCOM has been busy "selling the toothpaste" and lots of politicians have been using the Twinkie defense, the Twinkie Offense, and the Twinkie induced self deception.

It is enough to drive a civilization nuts.

That catastrophe is another "unintended consequence" of a lack of vision in Western leaders:
More than 100 million people will die ... by 2030 if the world fails to tackle climate change, a report commissioned by 20 governments said on Wednesday.
It calculated that five million deaths occur each year from air pollution, hunger and disease as a result of climate change and carbon-intensive economies, and that toll would likely rise to six million a year by 2030 if current patterns of fossil fuel use continue.
"A combined climate-carbon crisis is estimated to claim 100 million lives between now and the end of the next decade," the report said.

VII.  Denial Is Not A Survivable Replacement For Policy

And one can wonder if America will become like Cypher, fading into a self-induced oblivion:
In closing today's post, I suggest that we try to remember the character Cypher in The Matrix movie.

He was an individual who got tired of fighting the matrix, then sold out those who had awakened and become free of the matrix; and who were trying to free others.
"What is wrong with tyranny? This tastes so good!"

Then notice these words in the lyrics of a song we recently took note of: "I'd love to change the world, But I don't know what to do, So I'll leave it up to you" (Glory Daze - 2). How similar is that to the traitor concept in the matrix exemplified by Cypher, the guy who snitched out his own so that the agents of artificial intelligence would then revert him back into the unconscious illusion of the matrix?

Yes, one has to wonder about the old saying concerning "science fiction" as applied to The Matrix -- there is sometimes more truth than fiction in it.
