Fig. 1 The Oceans We Knew Are Already Gone |
The binocular view of the Atlantic tells us little to nothing about the ocean depths (Fig. 1).
When a detective asked a bank robber why he robs banks, the robber replied "that's where the money is."
When an oceanographer is asked why do you do research under the ocean's surface, the correct answer is "that's where the heat is".
And that is why this Dredd Blog series details in situ measurements at thirty-three depth levels.
Fig. 2 WOD Zone-Number Quadrants |
Today's appendix presents those same depths in four quadrants (Appendix Q).
The quadrants originate from the way the World Ocean Database (WOD) numbers the zones.
That numbering system is determined by the latitude of zero degrees and longitude of 180 degrees (see Fig 2, and Appendix Q).
But the main thing is that Quad 1 zones are numbered in the 1 thousands, Quad 2 zones are numbered in the 3 thousands, Quad 3 zones are numbered in the 5 thousands, and Quad 4 zones are numbered in the 7 thousands (WOD numbered them that way).
Or, remembering that the square at Fig. 2 depicts a globe, begin at zero degrees longitude and go East 180 degrees (staying above zero degrees latitude) to traverse Quad 1 (1xxx numbered zones); or begin at zero degrees longitude and go West 180 degrees (staying above zero degrees latitude) to traverse Quad 4 (7xxx numbered zones); or, still remembering that the square at Fig. 2 depicts a globe, begin at zero degrees longitude and go East 180 degrees (staying below zero degrees latitude) to traverse Quad 2 (3xxx numbered zones); or begin at zero degrees longitude and go West 180 degrees (staying below zero degrees latitude) to traverse Quad 3 (5xxx numbered zones).
This difficulty was caused once upon a time in the west "by librul scientists" who could not stand the fact that the Earth was flat (Once Upon A Time In The West - 2).
But I digress.
Anyway, the seemingly turbulent lines in the graphs are based on measurements of temperature.
The lines on the graphs indicate, as with the other graphs in this series, that heat is moving even in the deepest depths.
Another Dredd Blog series indicates more about infrared photons which carry the heat from the ocean surface down to those depths (The Photon Current, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9).
Probably the most pronounced take-away from all of this is that the ocean heat levels indicated in some oceanographic textbooks do not exist.
Those oceans are already gone.
The previous post in this series is here.
