A Methanol Economy Way Out of Here - 6

I. Introduction

In today's post I want to tie in Oil-Qaeda's war on methanol and elucidate upon methods they have used for many decades to deprive civilization of security.

Yes, how Oil-Qaeda has deprived civilization of safer sources of fuels, safer transportation, safer power plant generation of electricity, and have purposefully placed civilization on suicide watch just to enrich themselves at the expense of humanity (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4).

II. Preliminary Background

Some aspects of the general story are covered in other series such as (Corp Germ > Corp Seed > Corp Monster, 2, 3, 4) and (The Peak of the Oil Lies, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

For example, in the post Corp Germ > Corp Seed > Corp Monster - 3 Dredd Blog pointed out the way which Oil-Qaeda corporations, decades ago, attacked electric powered public transportation.

Their conspiracy to destroy clean fuelled public transportation, which was based on electric vehicles, has been documented in history, as has the criminal prosecutions of those corporations for doing so.

But, by the time they were stopped the damage had already been done to that clean public transportation system.

III. Government Sponsorship

Undeterred, Oil-Qaeda always finds ways to get cosy with other departments of government:
"One of our greatest helpers has been the State Department" - John D. Rockefeller (1909)"
(A History of Oil Addiction - 2). Their ongoing subterfuge neatly tied in to other major British political events of that era.

Political events which, oddly enough, were based on a notion of a looming Battle of Armageddon:
From the moment he arrived at the Admiralty, a young man of destiny, Churchill started to prepare the fleet for the Battle of Armageddon he believed was inevitable.
...
Then, in 1911, the German Kaiser provoked the Agadir crisis ... Churchill went to the Admiralty and his outlook transformed. He was immediately confronted
How "our" oil got under "their" sands
with the decisive question: to convert the navy from coal to oil ... the "fateful plunge" was made ... in April 1912 ... five oil-burning battleships were approved.
...
It was the Royal Navy which was the impetus for the development of the oil industry in Britain. The problem was supply and the security of that supply. Initially, the British government purchased shares in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, subsequently, British Petroleum [BP].
...
Then, to prevent further disruptions, Britain enmeshed itself ever more deeply in the Middle East, working to install new shahs in Iran and carve Iraq out of the collapsing Ottoman Empire.

Churchill fired the starting gun, but all of the Western powers joined the race to control Middle Eastern oil.
(The Universal Smedley - 3, cf. Viva Egypt - 2). A new international foreign policy developed which enveloped western civilization in policies that led to a common addiction.

A common addiction which eventually grew to the point that it gave new meaning to "it's in their blood."

IV. Oil Blooded Economy

The result is well known, which is explained by the United States Department of Energy in a blunt but revealing statement:
"Oil is the lifeblood of America’s economy."
(The Fleets & Terrorism Follow The Oil). The oil wars are also part of the puzzle, because "if we do not control the oil supply, we do not control our economic life," according to an Oil-Qaeda propaganda mantra.

But, now that the lifeblood has been found to be toxic to our planet, and destructive to our climate system, we now have to continually consider how to perform a blood transfusion (Do We Need A Blood Transfusion?).

And we wonder how we lost our collective minds by following leaders who led us to become addicted to a deadly poison (The Peak of Sanity - 3).

So, how is it that with all our democratic and scientific prowess we missed the gravity of the situation and missed the dangers to us all by not asking "what could go wrong?"

V. Methanol Was A Hundred Years Old Then

It is not like methanol had not yet been invented by that time, no, methanol was all grown up and robust by the time of the turn of events toward the fall of civilization into oil addiction:
" ... methanol has been one of the world’s most widely used industrial chemicals since the 1800s."
(Methanol Institute, "Methanol Basics"). Anything like the electric public transportation that was coming into existence as oil continued to be pumped into the bloodstream of Western Civilization, Oil-Qaeda attacked.

It attacked anything clean that it saw as a challenger to dirty oil.

Even the early automobiles, such as the Ford Model T, which could use methanol as a fuel (because the Model T, like other vehicles then, had a "flex fuel" engine) were eventually re-engineered to use only oil derived fuels.

The same is still true in today's world of flex fuel engines, and still true of the aggressions of Oil-Qaeda (there is a plan to get rid of them).

The "problem" with methanol use is the same as it was with the clean public transportation that Oil-Qaeda took out (if it isn't an oil user it is to be abolished).

It is not that the clean fuels won't work quite well, rather, it is just that clean fuel has been continually and unfairly suppressed via the surreptitious politics of Oil-Qaeda.

What exactly was and is still being suppressed, fuel methanol, is a worthy transitional liquid fuel and/or additive that could detoxify many a now-toxic source:
Increasingly, methanol is being employed around the globe in a number of innovative applications to meet our growing demand for energy. Methanol is a clean energy option that can be produced from natural gas, coal and a number of renewable resources including biomass, landfill gas and power plant or industrial emissions. As economically recoverable energy resources become scarcer globally, methanol will play an increasingly important role in the diversification of fuel choices and the promotion of clean energy applications in countries worldwide.

Methanol’s characteristics as a liquid fuel at room temperature and the diverse sources from which methanol can be manufactured, make it an attractive alternative fuel for cars, trucks and buses. Methanol is also used as an input to the biodiesel production process, as well as a feedstock for the production of dimethyl ether, a clean burning liquid gas used primarily for cooking and heating applications, but also a suitable replacement for diesel fuel. In addition, methanol is a unique resource for use in on-grid and off-grid power turbines for electricity production, and an ideal hydrogen carrier for fuel cell technology applications including portable power.

This simple molecule packed with hydrogen and no carbon-to-carbon bonds burns cleaner than most energy sources and provides a viable, readily available alternative to traditional fossil fuels. As demand for alternative energy and fuels grows, methanol is positioned to provide the power needed for numerous applications in our daily lives.
(Methanol Institute, "Energy"). It is also significant that methanol can be made anywhere, that is, it is not geographically limited to the sands of the Middle East nations.

Nevertheless, during the late 1800s and early 1900s war planning, politics, and design of ocean and land vehicles settled in on the developing notion of a foreign policy which required control of the Middle East by Western Civilization.

Oil eventually became the drug of choice, even though it required a colonial type of control over the Middle East via an extremely expensive, trillion dollar a year, military (MOMCOM - A Mean Welfare Queen).

Those military costs are socialized and propagandised to be a dynamic of creating western freedom, rather than their true purpose of protecting the profits of Oil-Qaeda.

That strategy also required the creation of propaganda machines to control the thinking of citizens in the nations of Western Civilization (The Deceit Business, 2, 3).

VI. Enter Modern Oil-Qaeda Propaganda

Consider that one important, out in the open, and real-world experiment using methanol-fuelled-vehicles actually worked well.

It was a needed and expected harbinger of things to come, until Oil-Qaeda intervened and funded political suppression and manipulation to stop it.

Suppression of success developed when Oil-Qaeda overtly corrupted the picture again:
The State of California has had an experimental methanol program that ran for 15 years in the 1980s and 1990s ... The assessment of both state officials and of Ford motor company was that is was successful.
...
In 1981, Ford delivered 40 dedicated methanol fueled Escorts to Los Angeles (LA) County. Four refueling stations were installed throughout the county, including two in underground garages. The experience gained with these initial refueling stations added considerably to the knowledge base required for methanol-compatible infrastructure, as well as identifying the ventilation requirements for underground installations. The 200-mile driving range of the vehicle also made it clear that four stations were inadequate to cover the territorial driving requirements of LA County. But the drivers of the vehicles loved the performance, offering 20 per cent more power than their gasoline-powered cousins and a 15 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency.
(California's Methanol Fuel Experience). Note that California's economy, if the state is considered for comparison's sake to be a nation, would be the world's eighth largest economy (Wikipedia).

A paper dedicated to that methanol try out history concurs with California's success, but points out that an opposition to it, from within, was funded by Oil-Qaeda:
Opposition [from Oil-Qaeda] soon emerged to the expanding demonstration programs for clean, non-petroleum alternative transportation fuels in California. Signs of this opposition appeared for example, at a dedication ceremony for the ARCO M85 fueling facility in Sacramento, the state capitol on March 21, 1990. On this occasion, Commission Chairman Charles Imbracht, Governor George Deukmejian and ARCO President George Babikian [of Oil-Qaeda] took part in the dedication of an M85 fueling facility installed at an ARCO station located just nine blocks from the Capitol building.

After remarks from Chairman Imbrecht and Governor Deukmejian regardeing fuel methanol and the state's efforts to develop the potential for this promising alternative, non-petroleum fuel, Babikian [of Oil-Qaeda] used the occasion to announce the commencement of the U.S. Auto\Oil Study, a reported $2 billion cooperative effort between the three U.S. auto manufacturers and fourteen major oil companies [Oil-Qaeda]. The research effort would study methanol and reformulated gasoline, among other things, and was expected to assert the probably ascendancy of reformulated gasoline as the favored motor fuel, in comparison mainly with fuel methanol.
(Fifteen Years of Fuel Methanol Distribution). In other words, Oil-Qaeda sabotaged the process by declaring that their own research which had not yet been done would "show" that this 15 year old successful methanol fuel demonstration had not been successful.

Yes, Oil-Qaeda started a propaganda campaign and chipped in $2,000,000,000 to get the lies off to a "good" start.

With additional monies, such as campaign contributions, Oil-Qaeda worked against any clean methanol energy success from then on.

Eventually, the then governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, shut down California's efforts.

VII. Conclusion

Once we followed those leaders who were taking us down the path of addiction to dirty oil, we could never take only one quick step back to the place we began.

No, recovery requires going through most or all of the multiple steps necessary to get back.

What was and is required is a step by step reversal of the colossal mistake (and it may now be too late).

We could have kicked the addiction more easily all along the way by switching to a fuel like methanol which works within the existing infrastructure.

That "use the infrastructure we have now" tactic eases the significant burden required to correct the very, very grave mistake our culture made long ago.

Anyway, this post is getting a bit long, so this series will be continued on another day.

A Methanol Economy Way Out of Here - 5

Attention Thelma & Louise
The inability to grasp simple arithmetic is caused by various things.

Take peak oil arithmetic: o = s - u, where s is the total finite supply of oil available, u is the current amount already used by civilization, and o is the total remaining oil still available for use.

It ought to be clear to a fifth grader that as u increases, o diminishes to eventually equate to "half used up".

The term "half used up" is just another way of saying the "peak oil" point, because from then on the amount of oil available, o, is always going to be less than half of what was originally available, and is always going down even further, so long as oil is still being used.

Regular readers know that Dredd Blog has had a series going that describes a way we can deal with what the scientist in the video at the end of this post calls "a liquid fuel problem."

Be sure to watch the video for an insight into what will happen if we do not heed the "bridge is out ahead" signs.

You may want to review the other posts in this series beginning with  A Methanol Economy Way Out of Here.

In addition to the methanol potential, a new government study says that 80% of electrical energy could be green by 2050.

Grid and Bear It

Over two years ago we addressed the national power grid in the post A Grid We Can Believe In.

In today's post we will continue the argument that our energy problems in the United States are a matter of choice in "the first instance", and guess what, our energy problems are a matter of choice in "the second instance" as well.

By "the first instance" I mean that we have always had a choice to use or not to use "fossil fuels" or "hydrocarbon fuels" such as oil, natural gas, and coal, which are finite and therefore non-renewable.

And we have always made the wrong choice in the first instance.

By "the second instance" I mean that we have always had a choice to efficiently use those fuels, but we have always made the wrong choice:
Today’s electric power system is shockingly inefficient in terms of both resource use and the market economy.

Approximately two-thirds of the fuel burned to generate electricity is lost in the generation and delivery process. Or, to put it another way, our electric power system operates at approximately 33 percent efficiency.

There has been no improvement in efficiency in the electric power industry since the 1960s.
(Electric Power System, emphasis added, see also). It is almost the same as leaking 67% of the oil coming out of a well, to pollute the ocean with it, like Deepwater Horizon, or like burning off 67% of natural gas into thin air, or like putting 67% of the coal straight into landfills without using it.

In other words we are wrong in the second instance for using only 33% of the energy source in a shameful, utterly wasteful, polluting, national infrastructure for a century, a hundred years.

Then when we discover the gross inefficiency, we are wrong for making no improvements to this shameful, utterly wasteful, polluting, national infrastructure for a half of a century, for fifty years, and that wrong adds criminality to the scenario.

To make those first and second instance choices is simply insane, crazy, incompetent, foolish, and utterly mindless, and it threatens national security.

Especially at a time when jobs are needed desperately, at a time when the national power grid is vulnerable to solar incursions, and at a time when we should have been making better choices for a century now.

Remember when we used to laugh a Japan for their cheap trinkets, then not too long after that they took over the automobile industry with better quality, so lets not laugh at China:
China has the world's fastest supercomputer, the fastest high speed trains and is leading the world in building nuclear plants. One of its more remarkable achievements has been modernizing the grid. The country has developed a 1 million AC volt transmission line that loses only 8 percent of its power on a 1,200 mile journey from the power plant in western China to the cities in the east.

An equivalent U.S. line, with only 760 kilovolts, would lose 80 percent of its power.
(GreenTech Media, Michael Kanellos, emphasis added). We are destroying, then rebuilding, the infrastructure in foreign nations during the ongoing oil wars while we let fellow Americans rot in the inefficiency here at home.

The 1% energy barons are not effected by the price of waste so they do not concern themselves with the suffering of the 99%.

Likewise, the apologist propagandist lackeys of the 1% will say that there is no choice, but those media puppets are deceitful, because there are many other and better choices, but the time for all the deceit to stop is long overdue.

As a result of willful choices, we have entered the criminally culpable era (Is 'Insanity' A Valid Defense To Ecocide?).

It is as if the 99% are beginning to realize that, like other mass murderers, the powers that be will not stop until they are stopped.

The dirty oil barons, dirty natural gas barons, and dirty coal barons will not stop on their own, rather, they must be stopped by their victims.

Natural Economy vs National Economy - 2

Two years ago today we were talking about natural economy, and the plight of California:
We have discussed the reality that the fate of California (and other states of course) can determine the fate of our national economy. California's current natural economy is troubled because they are running out of water.

The natural economy can "fail" and destroy the state economy. "This ain't no party. This ain't no disco. This ain't no foolin' around" goes the song.

Yes, this is stone cold for real:
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency Friday because of three years of below-average rain and snowfall in California, a step that urges urban water agencies to reduce water use by 20 percent.

"This drought is having a devastating impact on our people, our communities, our economy and our environment, making today's action absolutely necessary," the Republican governor said in his statement.

Mandatory rationing is an option if the declaration and other measures are insufficient.

The drought has forced farmers to fallow their fields, put thousands of agricultural workers out of work and led to conservation measures in cities throughout the state, which is the nation's top agricultural producer.

Agriculture losses could reach $2.8 billion this year and cost 95,000 jobs, said Lester Snow, the state water director.
(Breitbart, emphasis added). Everyone knows that jobs are the fundamental player in our national recovery plans at this time.

The fact that environmental failure in California is already causing job loss shows us that the natural economy is already impacting the state and national economy.

One of the reasons that global climate change must be taken seriously, then, is the fact that it can damage or destroy national economies.

Nations printing more money or borrowing more money won't start or stop the rains, droughts, storms, and rising oceans.

It will take the greatest of efforts to keep damage to the environment down to current levels, but we are not going to be able to make that goal.

Saving civilization may be the only option remaining to us.

The continuation of Beavis & Butthead national policies will guarantee both natural and national economic collapse at some point in our future or our children's future.

The notion that economy can prevail over environmental concerns is a false notion at the macro level. When the environmental penalty comes it is too late to avoid its impact on economy.

Even though someone turned on the faucets in California and they got record rains with floods following on the heals of those drought conditions, the principle of that post two years ago holds true today.

Likewise, their drinking water comes from afar, so the "water everywhere but not enough to drink" bleep goes on.

Global weirding marches on.

A Methanol Economy Way Out Of Here - 3

In this series of posts we have been pointing out that there is no one solution to the resource problems like peak oil or the oil induced global warming and climate change.

The more likely-to-succeed approach is to use all available renewable resources to counter the mounting problems.

Methanol was used in Indianapolis 500 race cars for decades, because it is powerful.

It can be made from "thin air" by removing carbon dioxide, it can be modified for use in diesel engines, and it is water soluble, as our prior posts show.

But it, like ethanol, is only one of many solutions we have at our finger tips already.

One of the mounting problems is extinction:
Most of the 17 imperiled species are mammals - the Arctic fox, polar bear, caribou or reindeer, muskox, and Pacific walrus, as well as four whales - gray, beluga, bowhead and narwhal. Four ice seals are also at risk - the ringed, bearded, harp and ribbon seals. The report names three seabirds in jeopardy - the Kittlitz's murrelet, spectacled eider and ivory gull; and also finds the sea butterfly, a species of plankton, to be at risk of extinction.
(Polar Ice Loss Accelerates Again, see also). A long list of human caused extinctions was pointed out in the post On The Memorial Daze, which evidently will see no end until civilization ends.

New research shows that carbon dioxide is the prime factor in the atmosphere which has a controlling position in the causes of the global temperature, even though it is cited by deniers as having zero effect on global temperature.

A Methanol Economy Way Out Of Here - 2

In the first post of this series, we touched upon the subject of methanol as well as "a methanol economy".

Of course methanol was confused with ethanol as usual, but the two are worlds apart, even though they are from the same chemical "family".

This subject is timely again because our laws have just changed to allow 15% ethanol ("E15" is 15% ethanol, "M15" is 15% methanol) to be used in fuels distributed and sold "at the pump".

We will also discuss the economic energy wars, a struggle of propaganda vs. reality, a struggle between big oil propaganda vs. science, the people, and progressive government officials.

We are already covering, in another Dredd Blog series (The Peak of The Oil Wars), the military invasion type of economic wars that are taking place world wide, or have already taken place, but are now presented in the corporate media as aftermath.

The graphic above is the cover of a book written primarily by Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. George Olah, a book which has been reviewed in technical publications.

For those who don't want to read a book about it, there is a Wikipedia Article that deals with the issue.

This morning the program Morning Joe, on MSNBC, continued the long term propaganda campaign designed by its owners, General Electric (GE), which is "owned" by the Pentagon.

Bush II regime officials were on that program casting the propaganda campaign around, a propaganda campaign we had coincidently posted about just yesterday concerning The Iraq Oil War, and the Bush II regime's part in it.

We also characterize the oil baron side of the economic wars as MOMCOM in a previous series.

The battle lines show that MOMCOM has the other side outnumbered a hundred to one, meaning that civilization as we know it is not represented equally and fairly in these wars, so civilization will lose this war.

The irony is that as civilization goes down it will take MOMCOM down with it, sorta like a mass murder-suicide case.

Some song lyrics seem appropriate:
Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happening
to my companions
Are they lost or are they found,
have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles
they're gonna have to abandon ?
There's slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

...

All that foreign oil controlling American soil
Look around you,
it's just bound to make you embarrassed
Sheiks walking around like kings,
wearing fancy jewels and nose rings
Deciding America's future
from Amsterdam and to Paris
And there's slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

...

Well, my baby went to Illinois
with some bad-talking boy she could destroy
A real suicide case,
but there was nothing I could do to stop it
I don't care about economy,
I don't care about astronomy
But it's sure do bother me
to see my loved ones turning into puppets
There's slow, slow train coming up around the bend.
(Slow Train, Bob Dylan). In conclusion, the bottom line is:
1) there are methanol, ethanol, solar, wind, and other ways to avoid the demise of current civilization,

2) MOMCOM rejected them in favor of an oil addiction death,

3) which shows MOMCOM is criminally insane,

4) MOMCOM has the blood guilt on its hands for the murder of an entire civilization.
The guilt belongs to all governments of all nations who do not want to end their denial, and who choose triage as the future of their countries.

The End of MOMCOM?

We have reported the awareness the military has concerning the effect of global warming on military tactics and strategy.

We have reported on the imperialism induced by national addiction to oil, together with the growing tension all that brings to the table of foreign relations.

Still, somehow it seems out of place for MOMCOM to remove the "O" out of the name, to remove the oil from the military oil media complex doesn't it? (MGMCOM ... military green media complex?)

But evidently that is what is happening, albeit on a small scale for the time being:
The 150 Marines of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, will be the first to take renewable technology into a battle zone, where the new equipment will replace diesel and kerosene-based fuels that would ordinarily generate power to run their encampment.

Even as Congress has struggled unsuccessfully to pass an energy bill and many states have put renewable energy on hold because of the recession, the military this year has pushed rapidly forward. After a decade of waging wars in remote corners of the globe where fuel is not readily available, senior commanders have come to see overdependence on fossil fuel as a big liability, and renewable technologies — which have become more reliable and less expensive over the past few years — as providing a potential answer. These new types of renewable energy now account for only a small percentage of the power used by the armed forces, but military leaders plan to rapidly expand their use over the next decade.
(NY Times). The military showing more saavy than the congress underscores a travesty. Perhaps that will begin to change if the White House and military step out and set an example.

The military has controlled the development of a lot of science, so I am struggling to see a silver lining on the dark clouds approaching.

Perhaps the military could look at the notion of The Methanol Economy, as well as tidal generators for development within our existing infrastructure.
