The Ghost Plumes - 9

I. A Brief Review

I began this series by pointing out that, like ghost water around ice sheets, ghost plumes are in effect hidden in plain sight (The Ghost Plumes).

I went on, in subsequent posts in this series, to explain that I think that the "bathtub model" and "thermal expansion model" thinking is what hides the ghost plumes from contemplation (thermal expansion is the "go to guy" when the ice mass loss and sea level data is insufficient to explain sea level change).

That state of being "hidden" is most likely caused by the catch-all buffer hypothesis which says the ocean expands when warmed, so if we can't find enough ice mass loss to account for sea level rise quantities, then we blame it on the mysterious catch-all "thermal expansion".

It is a convenient way out, like what was used to explain sea level fall before we remembered Newton sitting under the apple tree and until NASA caught mean old Mr. Gravity in the act of hiding a great big horde of ghost water (NASA Busts The Ghost).

Finding additional ways the ice could be melting was left by the wayside and the thermal half-truth took charge (On Thermal Expansion & Thermal Contraction - 39).

Then, along came the R. Bindschadler et al. 2011 paper which gave us a good handle on the extent of the grounding lines of tidewater glaciers.

Bindschadler et al. 2011 was recently was followed up by Rignot et al. 2019 which used multi-faceted analyses to tell us more about glacial melt in the tidewaters of Antarctica (Four decades of Antarctic Ice Sheet mass balance from 1979–2017).

II. Measurements, Measurements and Measurements

The gist of the two papers I cited above is that Antarctica is so vast that we have to find non-conventional ways of using measurements to detect what is happening in Antarctica, in terms of tidewater glacial disintegration and their melting.

The Bindschadler crew used photographs of coastal areas taken by satellites to identify where the grounding lines of tidewater glaciers are, then measured the cumulative length of the grounding lines.

The Rignot crew used gravitational readings along with photos to calculate the retreat of tidewater glacier grounding lines to calculate the amount of ice mass loss.

I use both of their research conclusions to try to develop a cognitive radar with which to surmise potential melt in all areas where grounding lines have been detected.

The analysis is basically: "1) if the grounding lines are "X" meters long in a particular zone; 2) if we can reasonably estimate the amount of the ice face of the glaciers contacted by the tidewater; 3) if we can calculate, using in situ measurements, whether the tidewater is of sufficient Conservative Temperature (CT) and Absolute Salinity (SA) values, as calculated using the TEOS-10 software; then 4) we can make reasonable estimates of plume volume potential."

III. Finding Basic Values

I am still perfecting the calculations concerning the grounding lines,  so today I present an updated view of those calculations that were presented in the previous post: The Ghost Plumes - 8.

One thing to remember is that the glacial ice is much closer to pure water than it is to seawater because, among other things, the saltiness is ejected during the freezing process.

For that reason, I believe it is more accurate to use today's 361.841 Gt value as the equivalent of 361,841 m3 of melt water.

Previously I used 365 Gt, so that is not much of a change to cause a redo (but there are also commas in the most recent big numbers!).

The bottom line is that in the final result, shown below, the cubic meter melt water values and the gigaton ice mass values have the same digits (but have a different decimal point location).

The graphic at Fig. 1 shows the geographical locations of the "Areas" and the "Zones" listed below.

Remember that this is a display of the values that would be derived in each Area and in each Zone WHEN the ghost plumes cause one millimeter of global mean sea level rise (1 mm GMSL).

IV. The Results

Note that the Area ("A-F") totals are presented at the end of each area's table, and the grand totals of all those Areas combined is presented after all the Areas have been presented.

V. Closing Comments

Note that the Rignot team's value for total gigatons of ice loss is less than that which 1 mm of SLR would compel by my calculations.

That is a good sign because the real scientists always underestimate ;-) ... just kidding ... these values today do not include the "Conservative Temperature (CT) and Absolute Salinity (SA) values, as calculated using the TEOS-10 software" mentioned in Section II above.

These are merely calculations showing what ice melt values would derive @ 1 mm of GMSLR.

I am in the process of fusing the TEOS-10 calculations in The Ghost Plumes - 7
with this calculation set and the Countries With Sea Level Change - 2 set.

But, before it can be universally applied (i.e. include Greenland etc.) I have to derive Greenland etc. values.

In an earlier paper (9 years earlier), Rignot seems to allude to ghost plumes and gives some indication of those values:
"These rates of submarine melting are two orders of magnitude larger than surface melt rates, but comparable to rates of iceberg discharge. We conclude that ocean waters melt a considerable, but highly variable, fraction of the calving fronts of glaciers before they disintegrate into icebergs, and suggest that submarine melting must have a profound influence on grounding-line stability and ice-flow dynamics ... The widespread two to threefold acceleration of the glaciers cannot be explained solely by enhanced lubrication of the bed from surface meltwater, for seasonal variations in glacier velocity do not exceed 8–10%, independent of latitude. Glacier acceleration is instead probably caused by the ungrounding of ice fronts from the bed, which reduces buttressing of inland ice and entrains faster rates of ice flow to the ocean. To unground glaciers from the bed, they must melt and thin. Warmer air temperatures thin the glaciers from the surface and allow the ice flotation margin to migrate inland. Such surface melting is well documented in Greenland. However, melting can also occur along the submarine termini of the glaciers. A warmer ocean will erode submerged grounded ice and cause the grounding line to retreat. In contrast, we know very little about rates of submarine melting along calving fronts. The only measurements of submarine glacier melting so far have been conducted in Alaska"
...
"Surface melt rates in the lower 5 km of the three glacier systems averaged 4–18 cm d−1 in July–August 2008 (highest value in July; refs 12, 14). Our inferred submarine melting rates are two orders of magnitude larger [than 'Surface melt rates']. Submarine melting is therefore a major ablation process across tidewater glacier fronts. This has several important consequences for glacier dynamics. First, submarine melting is more likely to dislodge glaciers from their beds than surface melting. Enhanced submarine melting, either from warmer ocean waters or enhanced forced convection by increased subglacial discharge, will melt grounded ice directly and cause grounding-line retreat. Our data show that a thermal forcing of 3 ◦ C melts ice at a rate of several metres per day, that is, hundreds of metres in one summer. In comparison, an increase in surface melting will be effective at ungrounding a glacier only if the glacier surface slope is low so that the line of hydrostatic equilibrium retreats rapidly with a small change in ice thickness. Furthermore, if the glacier retreats into deeper waters, submarine melting will increase because the submerged area and the pressure-dependent melting point of ice will both increase, two positive feedbacks. Moreover, submarine melting must have an enormous influence on ice calving mechanics. Pronounced submarine melting will undercut the submerged ice faces and promote calving from below the water surface, a mode of calving frequently observed at tidewater termini."
(Rignot et al. 2010, Nature Geoscience, emphasis added). He may have been the first to contemplate ghost plumes.

Anyway, I am marshaling their Greenland data for future inclusion along with the Antarctica data shown in the Section IV. tables above.

How To Identify The Despotic Minority - 10

I. Power To From The People

There is an interesting and prescient novel that predicted the demise of the power of "the people's house" (The People's House).

The author has been incessantly accused of being a spy because the accuser is in the deepest of the "it can't happen here" trances (Choose Your Trances Carefully, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

In the previous post of this series I mentioned how The Despotic Minority uses not only other people's money, they also use other people's power (How To Identify The Despotic Minority - 9).

The power of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was cited in that Dredd Blog post as one whose power was being usurped and used to further the power of The Despotic Minority (ibid).

Yet, that is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

II. Power From "Loyalists"

If the dear leader of The Despotic Minority (who can now use Pelosi's power not to impeach him) does not get his demand for loyalty from Republican Senators, i.e. does not also get more power from them, he has stated publicly that he has other sources of power he will use instead:
You know, the left plays a tougher game, it’s very funny. I actually think that the people on the right are tougher, but they don’t play it tougher. OK? I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump—I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough—until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad. But the left plays it cuter and tougher. Like with all the nonsense that they do in Congress … with all this invest[igations]—that’s all they want to do is —you know, they do things that are nasty. Republicans never played this." - President Trump
(Esquire Magazine Interview). So, the police and the military are right wing institutions rather than being apolitical?

The self-proclaimed nationalist Trump was also mentioned in the "manifesto" written by the white supremacist who killed 50 innocent religionists on their day of prayer  in New Zealand:
"The gunman who allegedly killed at least 49 people in two Mosques in
Mass Murderer Does Trump Hand Gesture
 New Zealand
early Friday morning appeared to have produced a 73-page manifesto in which President Donald Trump was described as 'a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose.'
(Newsweek, emphasis added). Meanwhile his associate, another Trumpster, has applied for and been granted a trademark for producing non-verifiable voting machines in China (China Gives Ivanka Trademark On Voting Machines).

Trump's quote in the Esquire piece brought to mind the statement that his ex-lawyer recently made while publicly testifying under oath before congress:
I fear that if he [Trump] loses the election in 2020, that there will never be a peaceful transition of power. And this is why I agreed to appear before you today” ...
(CNBC, quoting Cohen). Reminds me of the people taken captive in a bank robbery who ended up wanting to help and protect their captors in many ways (Stockholm Syndrome On Steroids, 2; cf. this , this, and this).

How To Identify The Despotic Minority - 9

I. Identify The Source of Power

Today, let's talk about the source of power that feeds the tyranny of the despotic minority (How To Identify The Despotic Minority, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

The main power source of the despotic minority is the lack of, or absence of, accountability; which is another way of saying a lack of competent law enforcement.

I say that because accountability is a critical part of the foundation of freedom and democracy (When Accountability Is A Plague, 2, 3, 4).

Dredd Blog first brought this up about a decade ago:
"Accountability is the missing conceptual link in the current debate over how best to advance democracy. Democracy affirms the need to justify decisions made by citizens and their representatives: it is a system that connects the values of the individual with the decisions of the collective. The preferences of citizens revealed by fair elections (representation) or organized and definitive discussion (deliberation) are the starting points of democratic legitimacy.
...
A clearly defined accountability system is crucial to any system of representative democracy because citizens, through their vote, legitimize or give authority to leaders to act."
(When Accountability Is A Plague). In addition to that quote I also wrote:
"We have seen the emergence of a new type of 'accountability' during the past decade.

We could describe it as stealth accountability, which is being framed and presented as 'policy differences'.

Instead of political wrongs, crimes, or sources for proper retribution, the worst of governance is accepted simply as bad policy for which impeachment is off the table.

The official story line designed to launder egregious and treaty violating government behaviour is composed of a one liner something like 'one administration cannot punish a prior administration for what that prior administration did based on policy differences between the two administrations'.

Having declared that premise, the official exercise then becomes one of describing everything the prior administration and everyone in it did as 'policy', even to the degree of calling war crimes a policy of government.

When such a position is unleashed and promulgated, each current administration is then relieved of the dirty, hard, and painful work of applying the principles of accountability to any previous administration, and instead, can focus on re-election.

This evaporation of accountability is one of the primary signs of a or the decline of the U.S. Republic."
(ibid). Let's now look into a group of the despotic minority which recognizes the dog whistle words used to cover up a lack of accountability (The Shapeshifters of Bullshitistan, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17).

The key word I want to focus on today is "immunity" (Follow The Immunity, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

II. Identify The Use of Power

One of the terms of art used by financial plunderers in the current Plutocracy (The Homeland: Big Brother Plutonomy, 2, 3, 4, 8) is "other people's money" or OPM.

That is an elementary school level tactic compared to the use of "other people's power", or OPP.

The despotic minority operatives use other people's power as if it was their own, and thereby they are able to exercise more power than the majority.

III. Identify Those Whose Power
Has Been Usurped By The Despotic Minority

I asked in a previous post "does Nancy 'impeachment is off the table' Pelosi get it yet?" because impeachment is the source of accountability built solidly into the U.S. Constitution (What Does The Word "Whoever" Mean?).

"Houston we have a problem" and we also have the answer to my question: "Pelosi says Democrats should not move to impeach Trump" (Roll Call).

Using The Speaker as another OPP source, the despotic minority has accomplished a major metastasis.

This cultural disease will now be able to spread like California wildfires (The Authoritarianism of Climate Change).

Pelosi's photo will appear along with other Queens of Stalingrad now (The Queens of Stalingrad, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

That is because she has created an additional immunity for the despotic minority, that is, Nancy Pelosi provided another way for enemies of the people to avoid accountability (Bush II Eradicated The Robber Barons).

So, Nancy, how are you going to stop Trump Voting machines in your district (China Gives Ivanka Trademark On Voting Machines) ?

IV. Where Freud Left Off

As regular readers know, I do not see this issue in terms of individual disease.

Instead, I see it as a cultural cognitive disease which Freud warned us to take deadly serious note of:
"If the evolution of civilization has such a far reaching similarity with the development of an individual, and if the same methods are employed in both, would not the diagnosis be justified that many systems of civilization——or epochs of it——possibly even the whole of humanity——have become neurotic under the pressure of the civilizing trends? To analytic dissection of these neuroses, therapeutic recommendations might follow which could claim a great practical interest. I would not say that such an attempt to apply psychoanalysis to civilized society would be fanciful or doomed to fruitlessness. But it behooves us to be very careful, not to forget that after all we are dealing only with analogies, and that it is dangerous, not only with men but also with concepts, to drag them out of the region where they originated and have matured. The diagnosis of collective neuroses, moreover, will be confronted by a special difficulty. In the neurosis of an individual we can use as a starting point the contrast presented to us between the patient and his environment which we assume to be normal. No such background as this would be available for any society similarly affected; it would have to be supplied in some other way. And with regard to any therapeutic application of our knowledge, what would be the use of the most acute analysis of social neuroses, since no one possesses power to compel the community to adopt the therapy? In spite of all these difficulties, we may expect that one day someone will venture upon this research into the pathology of civilized communities. [p. 39] 
...
Men have brought their powers of subduing the forces of nature
to such a pitch that by using them they could now very easily exterminate one another to the last man. They know this——hence arises a great part of their current unrest, their dejection, their mood of apprehension. [p. 40]"
(Civilization and Its Discontents, S. Freud, 1929, emphasis added). In the nine decades since that was written, the dynamics of brain science have borne him out:
"Beyond such internal mechanisms of variation, environment-driven plasticity lends yet another layer of complexity to the brain. The brain is capable of remarkable remodeling in response to experience. Signals originating from the environment can cause both widespread and localized adaptations. At the level of individual cells, structure and function are continually changing with the environment in a dance of lifelong brain plasticity, and some experiences, such as stress or physical exercise, affect the growth, survival, and fate of newborn neurons in neurogenic regions of the brain.
...
Traditionally, cells are defined by the tissue to which they belong as well as their particular functional role or morphology. This classification represents a developmental trajectory that begins early in embryogenesis and is hardwired into each cell. But other differences among cells are more subtle. Multi-dimensional analyses of gene expression and other metrics have revealed remarkable heterogeneity among cells of the same traditional “type.” Cells exist in different degrees of maturation, activation,plasticity, and morphology. Once we begin to consider all of the subtle cell-to-cell variations, it becomes clear that the number of cell types is much greater than ever imagined. In fact, it may be more appropriate to place some cells along a continuum rather than into categories at all.

Brain cells in particular may be as unique as the people to which they belong. This genetic, molecular, and morphological diversity of the brain leads to functional variation that is likely necessary for the higher-order cognitive processes that are unique to humans. Such mosaicism may have a dark side, however. Although neuronal diversification is normal, it is possible that there is an optimal extent of diversity for brain function and that anything outside those bounds—too low or too high—may be pathological. For example, if neurons fail to function optimally in their particular role or environment, deficits could arise. Similarly, if neurons diversify and become too specialized to a given role, they may lose the plasticity required to change and function normally within a larger circuit. As researchers continue to probe the enormous complexity of the brain at the single-cell level, they will likely begin to uncover the answers to these questions—as well as those we haven’t even thought to ask yet."

Like an ecosystem without habitat, any culture, society, nation, or civilization without accountability is doomed.

Any such entity becomes more and more temporary as the cancer of a despotic minority of any type exercises more power than the majority does, changing the very nature of the entity being infected.
