I. Brief Background

Thanks to Josiah Willard Gibbs I can use the TEOS-10 Org toolkit in Dredd Blog software modules and then share the results.

For today's graphs I used the latest World Ocean Database and SOCCOM data so that we can take another look at the thermal expansion hypothesis (On Thermal Expansion & Thermal Contraction, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33).

Today's graphs are based upon in situ temperature & salinity measurements (taken at the same depth and location at the same time).

The measurements are taken at up to 33 depths, then averaged together.

Before the averaging is done, however, the in situ measurements are used to calculate the TEOS-10 values of Conservative Temperature (CT) and Absolute Salinity (SA) as shown by example: here.

The difference between that example and today's graphs is that today's graphs are calculated from over a billion measurements that have, over the years, been stored in the WOD and SOCCOM datasets.

II. Today's Graphs

Today, there are three sections of graphs.

The Fig. 1a - Fig. 1c section concerns the Northern Hemisphere (NH), the Fig. 2a - Fig. 2c section concerns the Southern Hemisphere (SH), and the Fig. 3a - Fig. 3c section is the combined (averaged) values of the NH and SH (result is the Global Mean Average).

III. Presentation Details

The "a" graphs feature in situ salinity (SP) and the TEOS-10 calculated Absolute Salinity (SA).

The "b" graphs feature in situ temperature (T) and the TEOS-10 calculated Conservative Temperature (CT).

Note that the T and CT lines ("b" graphs) are virtually identical at this resolution, but the SP and SA lines ("a" graphs) differ by a small amount.

The old way of determining "salinity" was to measure how an electrical current would travel through the liquid sample, while the new way determines the mass of non-sea-water molecules in the liquid (that is why the word "conductivity" is used in the "a" graphs to express that measurement type, and why "g/kg" expresses the TEOS measurements).

The "c" graphs are calculations of thermal expansion and contraction of the sea water (What every oceanographer needs to know about TEOS-10, PDF).

IV. The Boundaries

The graphs all contain boundary lines that express the WOD oceanographer's maximum and minimum values for each ocean area and depth.

Those two lines are at the top and bottom of each graph.

Those basic boundary values are found in the WOD Manual.

I use those maximum and minimum values to illustrate where current characteristics fit, and how they have changed over several decades.

V. Conclusion

The TEOS-10 toolkit helps us to grasp the vastness of the world oceans, and what is taking place in them.

The time for believing that thermal expansion and contraction is "the" major cause (or even "a" major cause) of sea level change has passed.

The time for measuring the values of sea water, in terms of what temperatures are involved in melting the many tidewater glaciers of the world, is now (Hot, Warm, & Cold Thermal Facts: Tidewater-Glaciers, 2, 3, 4).

And in closing, I will say that the time for realizing how many glaciers are being melted down in the deeper depths is also right now (Antarctica 2.0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 [& supplements A, B, C, D, E, F]; Greenland 2.0, 2).

The "It's In Your Genes" Myth - 3

We are the Burg.
Today, I present some past posts that bear upon the dynamics taking place in our world now.

This involves some interesting science that you may find to be relevant to those dynamics.

But first a quote from one of them:
"Beyond such internal mechanisms of variation, environment-driven plasticity lends yet another layer of complexity to the brain. The brain is capable of remarkable remodeling in response to experience. Signals originating from the environment can cause both widespread and localized adaptations. At the level of individual cells, structure and function are continually changing with the environment in a dance of lifelong brain plasticity, and some experiences, such as stress or physical exercise, affect the growth, survival, and fate of newborn neurons in neurogenic regions of the brain.

Traditionally, cells are defined by the tissue to which they belong as well as their particular functional role or morphology. This classification represents a developmental trajectory that begins early in embryogenesis and is hardwired into each cell. But other differences among cells are more subtle. Multi-dimensional analyses of gene expression and other metrics have revealed remarkable heterogeneity among cells of the same traditional “type.” Cells exist in different degrees of maturation, activation,plasticity, and morphology. Once we begin to consider all of the subtle cell-to-cell variations, it becomes clear that the number of cell types is much greater than ever imagined. In fact, it may be more appropriate to place some cells along a continuum rather than into categories at all.

Brain cells in particular may be as unique as the people to which they belong. This genetic, molecular, and morphological diversity of the brain leads to functional variation that is likely necessary for the higher-order cognitive processes that are unique to humans. Such mosaicism may have a dark side, however. Although neuronal diversification is normal, it is possible that there is an optimal extent of diversity for brain function and that anything outside those bounds—too low or too high—may be pathological. For example, if neurons fail to function optimally in their particular role or environment, deficits could arise. Similarly, if neurons diversify and become too specialized to a given role, they may lose the plasticity required to change and function normally within a larger circuit. As researchers continue to probe the enormous complexity of the brain at the single-cell level, they will likely begin to uncover the answers to these questions—as well as those we haven’t even thought to ask yet."

The World According To Measurements - 12

The science of the world according to measurements is a very old science indeed: "The first record of a permanent standard was in 2900 BC" (Metrology, Wikipedia, emphasis added).

But, "The ability to measure alone is insufficient; standardisation is crucial for measurements to be meaningful" (ibid).

It is even more crucial at a time when a mis-measurement could cause catastrophe, as in nuclear testing (This Could Be The Real Reason Why North Korea Stopped Its Nuclear Missile Tests).

It boils down to the fact that in a world facing climate change catastrophe daily,  it is all the more important to have a standard way of talking about climate change / global warming:
"Observational data of salinity and relative humidity need to be globally comparable within requisite uncertainties over decades and centuries, but both quantities rely on century ‐ old provisional standards of unclear stability, or on ambiguous definitions. This increasingly urgent and long ‐ pending problem can only be solved by proper metrological traceability to the International System of Units (SI). Consistent with such SI ‐ based definitions, state ‐ of ‐ the ‐ art correlation equations for thermophysical properties of water, seawater, ice and humid air such as those available from the recent oceanographic standard TEOS ‐ 10 need to be developed and adopted as joint international standards for all branches of climate research, in oceanography, meteorology and glaciology for data analysis and numerical models.

(Salinity and relative humidity: climatological relevance and metrological needs, emphasis added). That is why Dredd Blog uses the TEOS-10 toolkit (TEOS Org).

Some may wonder why it is called the "Gibbs-SeaWater (GSW) Oceanographic Toolbox", so, let me explain.

The formulas encapsulated in the TEOS-10 software come originally from the mind of an American scientist:
"Willard Gibbs was a mathematical physicist who made enormous contributions to science: he founded modern statistical mechanics, he founded chemical thermodynamics, and he invented vector analysis."
(J. Willard Gibbs). The Europeans also speak well of him:
"J. Willard Gibbs, in full Josiah Willard Gibbs, (born February 11, 1839, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.—died April 28, 1903, New Haven), theoretical physicist and chemist who was one of the greatest scientists in the United States in the 19th century. His application of thermodynamic theory converted a large part of physical chemistry from an empirical into a deductive science."
(Encyclopedia Brittanica, emphasis added). Thus, the scientific work that Gibbs did is encapsulated in the software that Dredd Blog uses to analyze ocean water thermodynamics.

The better the scientific tools the better the science.

The Simple Choice: Leave Oil In The Ground

The Arctic sea ice is melting due to criminal activities (Another extreme heat wave strikes the North Pole).

I say 'criminal activities' because Oil-Qaeda has known about what burning fossil fuels will do to the cryosphere and civilization but eventually began to cover it up (Oilfluenza, Affluenza, and Disgorgement, 2, 3).

Oil-Qaeda has publicly declared that it is melting the cryosphere since at least 1962.

Oil-Qaeda knows that it is damaging the Earth and the people on it (Humble Oil-Qaeda).

This is the same tack that was brazenly taken by the Tobacco Industry when it tried to cover up the fact that its products caused cancer and death to millions of people (Smoke & Fumes).

The graphs at Fig. 1a and Fig. 1b show what is all ready happening this year at this time, which is still early in the ice-melt season.

The melting of sea ice does not have a direct impact on sea level.

However, it does have an indirect impact because when the ice melts it is relocated toward the equator along with land based ice sheet melt at Greenland tidewater glaciers (NASA Busts The Ghost).

The bigger story that goes along with the observable melting of sea ice is the unseen melting taking place deep under the ocean waters around Greenland (Greenland 2.0, 2).

It is the same story at the other polar region where the danger is even greater (Antarctica 2.0, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 [& supplements A, B, C, D, E, F]).

The graphs at Fig. 2a and Fig. 2b show the sea level changes taking place and accelerating before our very eyes (the PSMSL data used to generate those graphs are the 30 April 2018 dataset).

It is simple, we leave Oil-Qaeda's poison in the ground or we will put current civilization in the ground (Why Sea Level Rise May Be The Greatest Threat To Civilization, 2, 3, 4, 5; The Biggest Climate Challenge: Leaving Carbon in the Ground).

Greenland 2.0 - 2

Some years back there was a lot of coverage concerning a phenomenon called "the Blob" (The Blob That Cooked the Pacific).

Likewise, several years ago Dredd Blog postulated that "the Blob" (Fig. 1) would make its way to Greenland and impact tidewater glaciers there (e.g. The Question Is: How Much Acceleration Is Involved In SLR? - 4, New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II - 9).

The expectations I had also included sea ice melt.

These Oil-Qaeda induced events (caused by burning fossil fuels, thereby increasing the quantity of green house gases dumped into the Earth's atmosphere), have both short-term visible impacts, but they also have long term impacts such as sea level change.

One impact was that 2017 was the Warmest Year on Record for the Global Ocean (PDF).

NASA and other scientists concur with the expectation that Dredd Blog had, in terms of impact on the Cryosphere, as shown by this sampling of news:
"‘We’ve fallen off a cliff’: Scientists have never seen so little ice in the Bering Sea in spring" (Seattle Times, emphasis added).
...
"Winter temperatures are soaring in the Arctic for the fourth winter in a row. The heat, accompanied by moist air, is entering the Arctic not only through the sector of the North Atlantic Ocean that lies between Greenland and Europe, as it has done in previous years, but is also coming from the North Pacific through the Bering Strait." (NASA studies an unusual Arctic warming event, emphasis added).

In today's post I want to show readers the areas and tidewater glaciers that are impacted by warming waters of "the Blob" when those waters flow around and along the Greenland coastline.



The Greenland depictions in Fig. 2a and Fig. 2b are from a recent Dredd Blog post (Greenland 2.0).

I have included them today, along with an exhaustive list of Greenland tidewater glaciers, in order to show that there are many glaciers that are being impacted by ocean water that does damage to them.

As those glaciers melt the sea level changes (Sea Level Rise Impacts on Wastewater Treatment Systems Along the U.S. Coasts).
