Is A New Age Of Pressure Upon Us? - 11

Fig. 1 Less than 4.5
I have updated the earthquake database to now include 49,718 quakes.
Fig. 2 4.5 - 5.5

It is still lite on the end (2016 is not all in yet, and the past few years also seem somewhat lacking in some categories).
Fig. 4  6.5 - 8.0

I am still seeking recent data.

The video at the bottom of the post indicates that more data from recent years is available, but evidently I haven't found it all yet.

So, in the graphs I went up to the year 2015 with what I had so far.

The hypothesis that sea level change is causing some quakes to take place in areas where there are "hair triggers" at some fault lines seems quite plausible now, especially with the confirmation by Dr. McGuire in the previous post of this series (Is A New Age Of Pressure Upon Us? - 10).

After the year-end, I will seek the remaining 2016 data, as well as any other recent years (e.g. 2000 on).

Other datasets will also be updated, such as the WOD database and the PSMSL database.

One thing I want to do is map the fault zones shown in the video to WOD and PSMSL zones so as to compare ocean water activities above and below the ocean surface with Earthquake activity.

That is, unless the anti-science brigade of the Trumposphere destroys it all first.

U.S. scientists might do well to locate their data with scientists in other countries where Ludites and Know-nothings are still the fringe rather than having widespread power as they now have in the U.S.eh?

The next post in this series is here, the previous post in this series is here.

    1. That is near Chesapeake Bay, one of the higher sea level rise areas (The Extinction of Chesapeake Bay Islands).

  2. Changing ice/water distribution is going to make things interesting for sure, but what about fracking in the quake equation?

    1. The fracking quakes are, for the most part, smaller quakes that are part of the increase in areas farther away from the oceans (e.g. Oklahoma, Kansas).

I plan to do some Zone graphs in the future, which will hopefully be able to isolate some of them, i.e. separate them from the hypothetical sea level change engendered quake zones nearer to coast lines.

Seismic science is behind the curve on this.

But I will isolate zones over and around quake faults where sea level has changed (sea level rise and fall) and try to integrate some of the relevant pressure formulas with some of the weight changes as water moves away from one area into another.

If you run across relevant data let me know.

    2. Just wondering if the added pressure to the known major fault lines due to changing weight positioning might be some what lessened by the new stress cracks we've (FF industry) created, in the egg shell, not far from the main faults, geographically speaking. Giving some relief and paradoxically larger and larger quakes in what were once considered quiet areas.

    3. For the most part, fracking takes place away from the ocean.

As you can see by the video, for the most part, the major fault zones are under water.

You might want to read some previous posts in this series to get the full picture.

Especially the video by Professor McGuire here: "Is A New Age Of Pressure Upon Us? - 10".

  3. Thanks Dredd, I'm relatively new to your blog. Just the past month or so, a lot of reading to catch up on. SLR/SLF was the theme that lead me here and very interesting and informative for me as well. Everything has at least a little something to do with everything else. All points seem to connect.

    1. There is more to ice & water relocation than meets the eye (The Ghost-Water Constant, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

How many quakes are directly attributable is not well known in our current science.

But, the old adage "where there is smoke there is fire" fits the scenario.
