The Homeland: Big Brother Plutonomy - 3

In the first and second posts in this series we touched upon the militant foundation of the American Plutocracy, and its child the American Plutonomy.

In addition, Dredd Blog pointed out that on the way to the American Plutonomy, protected by that militant foundation, the plunder, which the American 1% has done to the American 99%, was kept "secret" in plain sight.

We pointed out that the 1% used the media to pull off this plunder with the form of "communication" known as propaganda, all the while calling it "journalism", "entertainment", or "the media".

A couple of generations of this abuse has generated a form of Mass Stockholm Syndrome, so that we are not talking about the dynamics of individual Stockholm Syndrome sufferers, but rather we are talking about how that syndrome works and manifests after being injected into an entire society.

Let's revisit some numbers before we get into the dynamics of how this plunder of America has taken place:
Upon closer inspection, the Forbes list reveals that six Waltons — all children (one daughter-in-law) of Sam or James “Bud” Walton the founders of Wal-Mart — were on the list. The combined worth of the Walton six was $69.7 billion in 2007 — which equated to the total wealth of the entire bottom thirty percent!
(The Few, the Proud, the Very Rich). This "30% of Americans" equates to about 100,000,000 American people, who have collectively as much "wealth" as those 6 Wal-Mart children.

We pointed out that those ~100,000,000 Americans are in poverty or on the edge of poverty, one paycheck or less away from falling through to financial ruin, something those six of the 1% won't worry about.

Is this concentration of power a result of equal opportunity and fair play, the supposed ethic of the Amercian Dream, or is it the result of a nightmare war on America that functions as Social Kuru, the social disease of financial cannibalism?

It is all of the above, but none of it is healthy or stable according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ):
The data may be a further sign that the U.S. is becoming a Plutonomy – an economy dependent on the spending and investing of the wealthy. And Plutonomies are far less stable than economies built on more evenly distributed income and mass consumption. “I don’t think it’s healthy for the economy to be so dependent on the top 2% of the income distribution,” Mr. Zandi said. He added that, “In the near term it highlights the fragility of the recovery.”
(The Graphs of Wrath, quoting WSJ, emphasis added). The heart, mind, and spirit of the method and means the 1% use has been known all along:
"One of the most important comments on deceit, I think, was made by Adam Smith. He pointed out that a major goal of business is to deceive and oppress the public.

And one of the striking features of the modern period is the institutionalization of that process, so that we now have huge industries deceiving the public — and they're very conscious about it, the public relations industry. Interestingly, this developed in the freest countries — in Britain and the US — roughly around time of WWI, when it was recognized that enough freedom had been won that people could no longer be controlled by force. So modes of deception and manipulation had to be developed in order to keep them under control
"
(The Deceit Business, quoting Noam Chomsky). The institution that controlled the people by force previously, the militant institution, became the propaganda masters going forward, deceiving the public into thinking that the militants were the most competent American institution.

The citizen journalist is now the antidote to the social kuru, but it is a weak force than can only talk about and reveal the issues which the 1% media will not reveal and talk about.

The next post in this series is here, the previous post is here.

    That is one story ...

  2. I was watching the NewsHour last night and one segment made me a bit encouraged about the future. That segment was done to highlight a movement in some school districts to help students understand how to determine the reliability of reportage that they read or see. It was apparent that the students were actually learning to discriminate between truth and everything else.

One of the reasons why this was so heartening was that I have, over the past three years, come to realize the massive distortions which are found at the base of virtually all popular media. What amazes me is that even on certain shows which tend to rail against the distortions it's apparent that those are still taking place. Perhaps the most outstanding example of a show which is fairly successful at distancing itself from the distortion practice is the Saturday and Sunday morning show "Up, with Chris Hayes." Chris is an At Large Editor for the Nation magazine, an outstanding progressive publication. I find that he works very hard to keep to factual information. I never mind differences of opinion, so long as they have a basis in fact, and this show certainly represents some strongly divergent opinions.

As to the theme of this article, I am a massive railer against the viral plutocracy which has now nearly fully replaced our democracy (and, I would note that this is a global trend). The vast majority of our politicians are bought by and owned by the wealthiest corporations and individuals. This has been true for some time, but, especially in the past decade this has had a drastically negative impact on the average American citizen. Our culture is now largely controlled by an insidious Orwellian "big brother" which controls the format of our society with a steel grip while somehow convincing the majority that it's unintentional. What is happening (or not happening) inside the Beltway, is intentional. That is contrived dysfunction, not real, but a sort of Kibuki theater of the political absurd.

  3. Bayard,

Hey, welcome. I checked out your blog, and noticed that you are a fan of Morning Joe on MSNBC.

Dredd mentions that show from time to time, criticizing it as a tool of GE, a weapons corporation tied to profit by wars. Link

But in general this blog describes the MOMCOM media as "Blind Willie McTell". Link

From time to time Morning Joe does talk about something more than the republican debates, but in general that is the theme of all MSNBC political programming.

Those who speak up too much there (Olberman, Shuster, Uygur) are fired, ending up over at Current TV. Link

Anyway, you have a good grasp of the concept of Plutocracy and plutonomy, so I for one am glad you inform bloggers about that on your blog.

  4. Morning Joe, more than anyone on TV but Fock Snooze, supports the GOP, ALEC and the corporatists. He is a rabid Economic Stockholm Syndrome,"Trickle Down," "Small Government," recession-causing deregulation -supporting, "Free Market" NUT - just like the other "conservatives."

And shame on MSNBC for giving him a forum to start my days with nausea. If I wanted those lies, I'd watch FOX or CNN. As it is I won't turn on msnbc now until after Scarborough is well gone.

  5. A republican staffer says the party went crazy, calls the government a plutocracy ("the true American elite: the plutocracy that runs the country") in his book "The Party Is Over" by Mike Loggren.
