The Photon Current - 7

Only One Way To Go
The way heat moves within the ocean (e.g. from surface to bottom) is the movement/transfer of 'heat energy', beginning with the absorption of solar radiation at sea level in the form of both visible light photons and invisible infrared photons.

It continues when those surface level absorbed photons are 're-radiated' as infrared photons into 'cooler atoms' near the atoms that first absorbed the Sun's light (cooler means containing less energy).

This re-radiation is governed by the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which is the 'direction' of hot to cold, warm to cool, which in the ocean generally means top to bottom (it can be up, down, or sideways so long as it is hot-to-cold).

After initial absorption the re-radiation of those photons in the form of invisible-to-the-human-eye infrared photons, 'heat transfer' becomes an ongoing dynamic:

"Infrared radiation is popularly known as 'heat radiation', but light and electromagnetic waves of any frequency will heat surfaces that absorb them. Infrared light from the Sun accounts for 49% of the heating of Earth, with the rest being caused by visible light that is absorbed then re-radiated at longer wavelengths [infrared photons have a longer wavelength than visible light photons have]."

(Wikipedia, Infrared). This infrared photon heat transfer phenomenon is universal, i.e. it is not limited to the oceans of the Earth:

"To astrophysicists studying the universe, infrared sources such as planets are relatively cool compared to the energy emitted from hot stars and other celestial objects. Earth scientists study infrared as the thermal emission (or heat) from our planet. As incident solar radiation hits Earth, some of this energy is absorbed by the atmosphere and the surface, thereby warming the planet. This heat is emitted from Earth in the form of infrared radiation. Instruments onboard Earth observing satellites can sense this emitted infrared radiation and use the resulting measurements to study changes in land and sea surface temperatures."

(NASA, Infrared, emphasis added). Oceanographers take it further in that they measure temperature changes (in situ measurements) all over the oceans of the Earth then report the measurement results to the World Ocean Database (WOD).

Using those in situ values in the WOD we can process them using the latest oceanographic/thermodynamic computer science and software to derive the heat content (potential enthalpy) at each location that has been measured (Wikipedia, TEOS-10). 

Those results tell us that those infrared photons have reached some of the deepest depths (The Photon Current, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6).

The Photon Current - 6

I. Introduction

In Fig. 1 the in situ measurement zones are separated into six groups, each composed six longitude based rows (1-6).

The topmost six numbers are the group numbers while the second list of numbers just under them are the individual vertical column numbers (0-35).

I have done this so that a comparison can be made between the values calculated from the latitude based rows and those calculated from the longitude based columns (A Deep Look At Latitude Layers).

It is one of many ways that accountants add up financial numbers to see how they match.

One thing that is similar between the two 'looks' is that the Sun's light/heat going into the oceans at the surface makes its way down through the depths in accord with the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

II. Data and Graph Appendices

The numerical data is presented in HTML tables, one for each Column Group and one showing all of the group values combined (Html 1, Html 2, Html 3, Html 4, Html 5, Html 6, and Html All).

The graphs are numbered the same way (Graphs 1-6 and All).

You may notice that atom related graphs are photon γ and hO, i.e. (photon count, potential enthalpy) which is two ways of saying 'heat' content (the photons are infrared heat, and potential enthalpy is the seawater heat content per TEOS-10).

III. Closing Comments

What this series is getting at is focused on a little more with this comment: "This same inconsistency is common to all advanced thermodynamics textbooks and is rarely discussed." (The Photon Current - 3).

Mainstream oceanographers are resistant to Quantum Oceanography because they utilize Newtonian Physics concepts expressed in ocean currents devoid of the analysis of relevant photon dynamics - even though photons really do exist.

This series is pointing out the ratio of potential enthalpy/mole quantity to Conservative Temperature:

"A thermodynamic potential is derived for seawater as a function of Conservative Temperature, Absolute Salinity and pressure. From this thermodynamic potential, all the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of seawater can be found, just as all these thermodynamic properties can be found from the TEOS-10 (the International Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater – 2010; IOC et al., 2010) Gibbs function (which is a function of in situ temperature, Absolute Salinity, and pressure)." 

(Thermodynamic potential of seawater, Dec. 2023). Trying to understand global warming induced climate change without understanding the nature of the thermodynamics of oceans/seawater is unfruitful in a major way.

Historically, since the Industrial Revolution of circa 1750, the oceans have absorbed up to perhaps 90% or so of the heat uptake, but when the oceans reach a relevant saturation point more of that heat uptake will remain in the atmosphere.
