The Phrase is Back: "Worse Than Previously Thought"

"We should have awakened him"
Regular readers know that Dredd Blog has talked about one of the most often used phrases going.

"Worse than previously thought" is that phrase, but there are variations.

That phrase, which reveals a proclivity "not to cause panic" is sure to generate a worse condition than accuracy would have.

We have not erred on the safe side, we have erred on the suicidal side, a  reality that has been mentioned here for years now (e.g. 2010, 2011), and, sadly it is up for discussion once again.

Here is the new reality just recently (05 October 2014) pointed out:
The global ocean stores more than 90% of the heat associated with observed greenhouse-gas-attributed global warming. Using satellite altimetry observations and a large suite of climate models, we conclude that observed estimates of 0–700 dbar global ocean warming since 1970 are likely biased low. (Nature, Quantifying underestimates of long-term upper-ocean warming)

It's worse than we thought. Scientists may have hugely underestimated the extent of global warming because temperature readings from southern hemisphere seas were inaccurate. (The world is warming faster than we thought)

We know that the planet is getting warmer—but it turns out that it's happening faster than we thought. Turns out scientists have been underestimating warming increases because of inaccurate temperature recordings taken in the southern oceans. (Earth Has Been Getting Warmer Way Faster Than We Thought)

The oceans are warming faster than previously thought, according to a pair of new studies released this weekend and published in the scientific journal Natural Climate Change. This conclusion is largely due to enhanced information gathering in the southern oceans, which was limited in the past. The research teams compared previous ocean warming figures, based on the less complete data, with projections based on information they were able to obtain from more detailed studies. They found that from 1970 through 2004, increases in ocean temperatures exceeded those earlier figures.(Scientists Discover World’s Oceans Warming Faster Than Predicted)
(emphasis added). I attribute this to the nature of cultural propaganda which falsely believes and teaches that the public should not be upset with the truth of the reality around them.

Scientists fear the ire of politicians who can affect their budget by cutting off funds to those who do not toe the line.

So, they underestimate or put a "positive spin" on factors that are dangerous to the lives of many people.

This is a big mistake, because the pressure to do something to alleviate the problem in time is not generated.

Meanwhile the time remaining to solve the problem becomes too short to avoid catastrophe.

This happens as the denial sufferers carp and complain that the dangerously conservative scientists are being too alarmist.

All this "care and concern" endangers the entire planet.

It works as a part of the mechanism which has and still is generating a cultural trance (Comparing a Group-Mind Trance to a Cultural Amygdala).

Being complicit in a mass-murder-suicide pact is not good (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact, 2, 3, 4, 5).

It is like becoming a member of Oil-Qaeda at a time when civilization is on suicide watch.

  1. Realization of how the exponential curve works will become astoundingly clear sooner than any would like, whether they're familiar with: the concept, the specifics or have even heard the term, or not. After all it's just a model - we have to keep rebuilding the one's we've developed, to account for all this rapidity and underestimation. Homo ineptitvdinvs.

  2. Bill Moyers had an interesting interview with an evangelical, atmospheric scientist who explained the rational behind christians denying manmade climate change. She's trying to convert her fellow christians to embrace the science. I hope she succeeds since time has almost run out.

  3. Anonymous Paulette,

Is that the same one as Dredd Blog presented in The Peak of Sanity - 9?

The Moyers video is at the bottom of the post.

    1. Sorry, yes it is.

Would that we could all see there are consequences to our actions.

    2. I have a problem with fundamentalists but her elegant scientific mind allowed her to assimilate the data and biblically interpret it. Most zealots can not.

I'm reminded of a quote from the movie Avatar which perfectly illustrates the fundamentalist mind: "It is hard to fill a cup that is already full."
