I found this script in my basement:

"New data from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggest that January of 2016 was, for the globe, a truly extraordinary month. Coming off the hottest year ever recorded (2015), January saw the greatest departure from average of any month on record, according to data provided by NASA.

But as you can see in the NASA figure above, the record breaking heat wasn’t

uniformly distributed — it was particularly pronounced at the top of the world, showing temperature anomalies above 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the 1951 to 1980 average in this region.

Indeed, NASA provides a “zonal mean” version of the temperature map above, which shows how the temperature departures from average change based on one’s latitude location on the Earth. As you can see, things get especially warm, relative to what the Earth is used to, as you enter the very high latitudes":

So many are plumbing the depths these days.

Climbing out is said to be the hard part.

Watching The Arctic Die

A big sorry to regular readers because I did not get out the daily yikes yesterday.

I have a "soil garden" that I had to harvest and put on the two vegetable gardens to prepare them for this year's springtime adventures.

In addition to that, I am upgrading, debugging, and otherwise improving the databases I use.

For example, I am switching to a hybrid monthly / yearly PSMSL database, using the monthly data to fill in gaps in the yearly data (more on that later).

I recommend that readers take a peek at Scribbler's piece about the Arctic (No Winter For the Arctic in 2016 — NASA Marks Hottest January Ever Recorded).

He points out that scientists he evidently read or talked to, are "floored" by the haps of this almost winter.

I had mentioned sometime back that the polar vortex and all of that Arctic system would break up and fade away, along with the ice caps there:

Under normal climate conditions, cold air is confined to the Arctic by the polar vortex winds, which circle counter-clockwise around the North Pole. As sea ice coverage decreases, the Arctic warms, high pressure builds, and the polar vortex weakens, sending cold air spilling southward into the mid-latitudes, bringing record cold and fierce snowstorms. At the same time, warm air will flow into the Arctic to replace the cold air spilling south, which drives more sea ice loss.

(On The Origin of Tornadoes - 6). I did a little artwork (Fig. 1) in that post to try to illustrate the fragmenting and breakup of the Arctic scene.

Then, in my last post I pointed out that contrary to common discourse, the melting Arctic ice cap, floating on the Arctic ocean, will contribute to sea level rise by the dynamics of relocation rather than by displacement (The AnthropoScenic Garbage-Gyre Level Rises).

As the sea level up there falls around Greenland, and as the ice floats toward the Equator, the methane clathrate phenomenon is going to be like a Porter Ranch methane leak on steroids:

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane - a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide - have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region. The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years. In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov of the International Arctic Research Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who led the 8th joint US-Russia cruise of the East Siberian Arctic seas, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed.

The AnthropoScenic Garbage-Gyre Level Rises

One of the more popular Dredd Blog series is New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

I hadn't heard of a "gyre" until I ran across a group of scientists who were discussing a "Garbage Patch" in the Pacific Ocean (Garbage Garbage Garbage).

While I was researching then writing about it, five such gyres showed up, one of which ended up being located where the MH-370 was searched for, but not found.

Perhaps a metaphor of sorts for Civilization's ongoing pouring of itself, as garbage, into the oceans of life.

While thinking about these locations and their being where some of the highest sea levels are also found , somehow it dawned on me that the melting polar ice sheets are also heading that way.

I realized that they will contribute to sea level rise (SLR) of the ghost-water type.

Let me explain.

It is commonly known that when the Arctic ice shelf, which floats upon the Arctic Sea, melts, theoretically it does not contribute much if any to "displacement" SLR.

That is, since the ice volume is already in the ocean, any displacement of its volume into the volume of the ocean has already happened (see e.g. Icebergs Contribute to Sea Level Rise, The Warming Science Commentariat - 2).

There may be some thermal consideration (ibid), but the larger picture for Arctic sea ice involves its relocation SLR once it melts and becomes sea water (Fig. 2).

In this sense, Arctic ice melt-water has the same future as ice sheet displacement melt-water, icebergs, and ghost-water (The Ghost-Water Constant, 2, 3, 4).

This is because Arctic sea ice is located within the sea level fall (SLF) zone of the Greenland Ice sheet (The Gravity of Sea Level Change, 2, 3, 4).

Water in that area is relocated toward the Equator by forces generated by the Earth's rotation, which causes a bulge in the Earth at the Equator (The Battle of the Bulge).

Thus, as the floating Arctic Ice melts, it will no longer cling to land there, so as to anchor itself in place there.

It will flow away from the Arctic region like icebergs, other melt-water, and ghost-water do.

This adds a bit more to the maximum potential SLC in various areas closer to the equator.

You know, where the garbage is, and where the fish once were (By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans, study says).
