Weekend Rebel Science Excursion - 33

Systems involve Systems Science
Ah, Friday.

So, let's do some science.

Today, I want to show an example of dementia in the news media, a dementia of the criminal insanity sort.

Yahoo News has this headline "Gov’t Scientists: Antarctic Sea Ice Is Growing — Because Of Global Warming" and Media Matters has this headline: "CNBC Caught Soliciting Writer To Claim Global Warming Is A Hoax."

More about those in a moment, but first let's do some Fifth Grade science that Yahoo News and CNBC must have failed ... assuming they took any science.

The Yahoo News piece got its story then quoted from a source that indicated:
Government scientists are not only blaming global warming for the centuries-long collapse of western Antarctic ice sheets, but global warming is also being blamed for record levels of sea ice in the South Pole.

Antarctica’s sea ice set another record this week, reaching 815,448 square miles above normal, breaking a record set this past weekend of 800,776 square miles above normal ice coverage.

These two records set within a week of one another shattered the previous ice extent record of 710,428 square miles above average that was set back on December 20, 2007.
(Gov’t Scientists: Antarctic Sea Ice Is Growing, emphasis added). That site is one of several denier sites that are subjects of the study of Agnotology (Agnotology: The Surge - 5).

What government scientists actually say is that the volume, i.e. the quantity of ice in Antarctica has been decreasing for years because of global warming:
There has been lots of talk lately about Antarctica and whether or not the continent's giant ice sheet is melting. One new paper, which states there’s less surface melting recently than in past years, has been cited as "proof" that there’s no global warming. Other evidence that the amount of sea ice around Antarctica seems to be increasing slightly is being used in the same way. But both of these data points are misleading. Gravity data collected from space using NASA's Grace satellite show that Antarctica has been losing more than a hundred cubic kilometers (24 cubic miles) of ice each year since 2002. The latest data reveal that Antarctica is losing ice at an accelerating rate, too.
(NASA, Is Antarctica Melting?, cf. Antarctic Ice Melt, emphasis added). The news sources who do not know the difference between ice extent (square miles) on the surface of the ocean, and ice volume (cubic miles) are a problem.

The poles are losing their volume of ice on land (cubic quantity) even if ice extent (square quantity) increases or decreases from time to time on the ocean surface:
What is the difference between ice "extent" compared with ice "volume"?

One has to do with how much surface area an ice sheet covers, the other has to do with how much ice volume there is in that ice sheet.

Be sure to notice and remember that when you read opinions about whether or not the amount of ice at the Earth's poles is decreasing or increasing, because one of those words used to describe it means "area", but the other means "volume."

The difference between the two concepts could not be greater when one is attempting to determine whether the amount of ice at the Earth's poles is increasing or decreasing.

In other words, if you wanted to know how much water would end up in the oceans if the polar ice melts, would you use formulas to calculate "area" or would you use formulas to calculate "volume" of the ice sheet?

With "extent", i.e. "area", the result of that formula is expressed in square miles, but the result of the volume formula is expressed in cubic miles.

A 2 inch ice cube in the 2 inch deep ice tray of your refrigerator is illustrative; if you want to calculate the extent or area of that ice cube (length x width) it is 2 inches x 2 inches, which equals the "extent" or "area" of 4 square inches.

But you can't figure out how much water there will be if the ice melts until you know if the ice goes to the top of the tray, or is only half way to the top; half full (the length and width are both still 2 inches in either case).

We can illustrate this by calculating the full volume (length x width x height) expressed as 2 inches x 2 inches x 2 inches which is a volume of 8 cubic inches; and we can illustrate this further by calculating half full, 2 inches x 2 inches x 1 inch, which is a volume of only 4 cubic inches.

With polar ice calculations we use the same formulas, except that the resulting numbers are expressed in miles not in inches.

Like the ice cube tray, the same ice sheet in terms of number of square miles when the ice is as thin as a piece of paper, compared to that number of square miles of ice sheet when it is a mile thick, would be radically different in terms of cubic miles, in terms of ice volume.

NOTE: This is not just about Fifth Grade arithmetic and math, it is about the Jones Town types in Oil-Qaeda who are encouraging us to commit omnicide (suicide) along with them (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact, Security: Familyland, Fatherland, or Homeland? - 4).

Keep up the rebellion against Oil-Qaeda's promotion of bad information!

Security: Familyland, Fatherland, or Homeland? - 4

"Luke, I am your father."
In today's post we will consider a taboo portion of a concept that originated in ancient civilization, yet still persists in civilization today.

I don't know if "the dark side of the force" was considered in ancient times, but it has been considered from time to time in this series, and, as we will discuss later in this post, has been considered by at least one current and well known intellectual.

This series deals with a dynamic, a product of our culture, a common yet generally sub-surface concept: "a common metaphor, shared by conservatives and liberals alike -- the Nation-as-Family metaphor, in which the nation is seen as a family, the government as a parent and the citizens as children"  (The Nation-as-Family Metaphor).

It has quite a direct impact on us, yet, it is not a part of everyday consciousness: "Directly, but not consciously. As with other aspects of framing, the use of this metaphor lies below the level of consciousness."  (The Nation as Family, PDF).

The idea has been around for quite a while:
The family as a model for the organization of the state is a theory of political philosophy. It either explains the structure of certain kinds of state in terms of the structure of the family (as a model or as a claim about the historical growth of the state), or it attempts to justify certain types of state by appeal to the structure of the family. The first writer to use it (certainly in any clear and developed way) was Aristotle, who argued that the natural progression of human beings was from the family via small communities to the polis.

Many writers from ancient times to the present have seen parallels between the family and the forms of the state. In particular, monarchists have argued that the state mirrors the patriarchal family, with the people obeying the king as children obey their father.
...
Aristotle often describes personal and domestic relationships in terms of different forms of government.
...
Confucius believed the child should be subordinate to the parent, younger brother to the older, wife to husband, and subject to the sovereign who is to be regarded as the father of the nation.
(Wikipedia, "Family as a model for the state", emphasis added). Remembering, of course, that "the structure of the family in ancient times was generally far more hierarchical – and patriarchal – than today".

Anyway, let's consider the good side of this metaphor:
The Nurturant Parent Model. The family is of either one or two parents. Two are generally preferable, but not always possible.

The primal experience behind this model is one of being cared for and cared about, having one's desires for loving interactions met, living as happily as possible, and deriving meaning from one's community and from caring for and about others.
(The Nation-as-Family Metaphor, cf. The Common Good series). Now, let's consider the dark side by asking "what if the state, the nation, the powers that be in a civilization go stark raving mad?"

What if government becomes a mass-murdering, warmongering, propaganda driven engine of destruction like Darth Vader, Luke's only living parent?

This was discussed in yesterday's post in the sense of some of that being the case now:
There is, in fact, a strong case to be made that a prime concern of government is the security of state power from the population. As those who have spent time rummaging through archives should be aware, government secrecy is rarely motivated by a genuine need for security, but it definitely does serve to keep the population in the dark. And for good reasons, which were lucidly explained by the prominent liberal scholar and government adviser Samuel Huntington, the professor of the science of government at Harvard University. In his words: “The architects of power in the United States must create a force that can be felt but not seen. Power remains strong when it remains in the dark; exposed to the sunlight it begins to evaporate.” [cf. The Ways of Bernays]
Too scary to be real?
...
These simple truths are rarely acknowledged, but they provide insight into state power and policy, with reverberations to the present moment.

State power has to be protected from its domestic enemy [the people]; in sharp contrast, the population is not secure from state power.
...
Let us turn to another question: What about the security of the population? It is easy to demonstrate that this is a marginal concern of policy planners. Take two prominent current examples, global warming and nuclear weapons. As any literate person is doubtless aware, these are dire threats to the security of the population. Turning to state policy, we find that it is committed to accelerating each of those threats -- in the interests of the primary concerns, protection of state power and of the concentrated private power that largely determines state policy.

Consider global warming. There is now much exuberance in the United States about “100 years of energy independence” as we become “the Saudi Arabia of the next century” -- perhaps the final century of human civilization if current policies persist.

That illustrates very clearly the nature of the concern for security, certainly not for the population.
(New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II - 8, quoting Chomsky). That nation as family metaphor or model becomes useless, or at least limited doesn't it?

Should we as children, or could we, change all that by having Darth Vader change political parties?

If he is a democrat urge him to become a republican, or vice versa?

Can we treat madness with the medicines of political correctness, prescribe better politics as a cure for a sociopath, psychopath, or another demented type?

Or can we treat them with a better education, better poetry, more guns ... or what?

Think about it, is it a stretch and a bit too far to expect that a rogue nation will, like Darth Vader in the movies, come around to help Luke and Princess Leia at the very end, just before becoming immortal?

I will close with this quote:
"In other words, a society does not ever die 'from natural causes', but always dies from suicide or murder --- and nearly always from the former, as this chapter has shown."
(A Study of History,  by Arnold J. Toynbee). Take care and have a great Fourth of July.

New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II - 8

"Our food, the fish, is in here somewhere"
On March 25, 2009, Dredd Blog posted a piece titled "Garbage Garbage Garbage" concerning the dumping of massive amounts of garbage into the oceans of the Earth.

That Dredd Blog post introduced the concept and reported about an "ocean garbage gyre."

The indication was that a lot of what is being dumped indiscriminately into the oceans is plastic garbage which is toxic in various ways to marine life --and is eventually even quite toxic to the water itself.

Soon after that I reported that human skulls and radioactive material were being dumped into the ocean by the Mafia: Mafia Contract Out - On Mother Earth.

More recently we see that governments are also dumping radioactive material into the Pacific at the rate of hundreds of tons a day (cf. The Fukushima Coverup) like an "official Mafia" (The Atomic Sailors).

This current Dredd Blog series began a few months after that with New Continent Found - Garbage Gyre II which was followed with regular episodes in the series (cf. episode 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

Most recently Dredd Blog pointed out that the mysterious Malaysian Flight 370 was lost in a sea of garbage ... garbage that could be seen by satellites in space looking for flight 370 ... but the aircraft itself disappeared into the garbage laden sea, lost like our ship of state is lost (Titanic Mistakes Using The W Compass - 2).

Lost, like civilization seems to be lost (You Are Here).

In today's post, let's look at some new research which indicates that not only are the oceans (our extended selves) endangered by this garbage dumping, YOU and I are literally eating that garbage as it makes its way through the marine food chain to our dinner tables (a "don't sh*t where you eat" violation).

But first, be aware that a massive propaganda campaign has been going on recently, paid for by Oil-Qaeda.

Its purpose is to have us look somewhere else other than towards them, the ones who make the plastic out of oil and who pollute the air by peddling oil containing green house gases, thereby causing global warming induced climate change (Oil-Qaeda - The Indictment).

So, read the reports with that in mind, because they are often full of deceit rather than facts and truth (The Peak of The Oil Lies - 8, Viva Egypt - 3).

For example, one report chose to skirt the obvious:
Millions of tons. That’s how much plastic should be floating in the world’s
Too scary to be real?
oceans, given our ubiquitous use of the stuff. But a new study finds that 99% of this plastic is missing. One disturbing possibility: Fish are eating it.

If that’s the case, “there is potential for this plastic to enter the global ocean food web,” says Carlos Duarte, an oceanographer at the University of Western Australia, Crawley. “And we are part of this food web.”
(Science, emphasis added). Did you notice the injection of doubt by using weasel phrases "disturbing possibility" and "there is potential" (rank denialism or deceit)?

Why do I say that?

We have videos and have known for decades that birds, whales, and fish have plastic in their stomachs when they wash up dead on shore or are found floating lifeless on the surface of the garbage dump, a.k.a. oceans (Gray whale dies bringing us a message -- with stomach full of plastic trash, How Plastics Affect Birds).

Like I say, it has been known for decades:
1999 was not the first time scientist studied plastic pollution in the ocean. Thor Heyerdal observed plastic in 1969 crossing the North Atlantic on Ra I. Two years later [1971] Edward Carpenter, from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, netted pellets and fragments of plastic pollution between the east coast and Bermuda. Plastic pollution in the North Pacific Gyre was first described by Robert Day in 1989 near the coast of Japan, and in the South Atlantic Gyre near Cape Town, South Africa in 1980 by Robert Morris of the Institute of Oceanographic Science in the UK. It was a quiet, poorly-understood menace that palled in significance and interest to oceanographers.
(Plastic Pollution Coalition, emphasis added). Like global warming, this is "ancient history" that has been constantly ignored.

Such business-as-usual (BAU) is either ignorance or psychopathic indifference, depending on who is doing the ignoring with BAU (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact - 5).

So, take the plastic McTell News with a grain of salt to the extent that it presents this picture as brand spanking new science or that it "might" be a problem  (PNAS PDF, Business Insider, Live Science).

In closing, since I may not have shocked you enough yet, there is a "reason" or a lack of reason for this predicament:
But protecting it from whom? There is, in fact, a strong case to be made that a prime concern of government is the security of state power from the population. As those who have spent time rummaging through archives should be aware, government secrecy is rarely motivated by a genuine need for security, but it definitely does serve to keep the population in the dark. And for good reasons, which were lucidly explained by the prominent liberal scholar and government adviser Samuel Huntington, the professor of the science of government at Harvard University. Iraq's April 30 4th Of July & Iran's Win - 2

Middle Eastern Protesters
Today I am reposting a post of five years ago to show how our foreign policy has been frozen in You Are Here machinations for decades.

It is from July 1, 2009 where the issues of Iraq and Iran were discussed.

The mess is still a mess all these years, dead bodies, dead policies, public anger and endless wars later.

It is like the movie "Ground Hog Day" where we keep waking up the the same old same old every day.

Here is the nostalgic text from that 2009 post:

The results of the 8 year war are now in.

Iran won.

Iraq and Iran fought an 8 year war in the 1980's during Saddam Hussein's reign, which ended as a stalemate that cost a million male lives and left a population composed of a majority of women in Iran.

The U.S. backed Saddam Hussein in that war.

When the luv affair with Hussein ended after he invaded Kuwait, and the U.S. later invaded Iraq during Bush II, things began to change.

The Shia radicals who had been expatriated to Iran and elsewhere became activated and they returned to Iraq.

Soon they embedded themselves into the Iraqi government when the Baathists were banned, during the Bremer leadership, soon after the U.S. invasion and at the beginning of the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Bremer, like Bush II, knew nothing of the Shia v. Sunni dynamics and the religious struggle between them so he, like most Americans, had no idea what was going on in that regard.

Today and back then the Shia of Iraq and Iran are aligned against the Iraqi and Saudi Sunni, and the Kurds to the north care not a lot for either; hence the U.S. has sown the seeds for the future political crop which will not be and is not now pro-American.

The Iraqi April 30 celebrations about the Americans leaving can be compared to the U.S. 4th of July alignment against the British Empire and for U.S. independence from Britain long, long ago.

Nationalism held the U.S. together then, after its independence, and will hold Iraq together for awhile now, but so will closer ties to Iran mixed with a hatred of America they now share.

These types of energies too, however, will wane eventually and those ancient divisions within Iraq will sprout once again, helping the greater problems to return to the surface and blossom.

Shia, Sunni, and Kurd will march again with Shia support from Iran, and with Sunni support from other neighbouring countries.

The U.S. civil war took a long time to develop following the exuberant 4th of July, but it came, and the April 30th Iraqi exuberance will also give way to Iraqi civil war in due time.

But it will not be as bad as the U.S. civil war was.

From an oil baron perspective, all that remains to be seen is whether the oil barons can keep a hold on the Iraqi oil they greedily went for under the oil baron regime of Bush II.

Agnotology: The Surge - 9

Sarah Palin on Steroids
In this series we have been exploring the interesting field of the study of ignorance generators within American society / culture.

In the first post of this series, for instance, it was pointed out that Agnotology "is the study of culturally-induced ignorance or doubt, particularly the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data" (Agnotology: The Surge).

Today, we will take a look at a classic example of the subject matter studied by Agnotology.

That example is "Sarah Palin on steroids" (see video at the end of this post), a candidate running for a House of Representatives seat in Louisiana, a candidate funded by Oil-Qaeda.

It is a textbook case.

But first, let's remember that people can be deceived, can trust people they should not, and can and do become increasingly ignorant as time goes on, because ignorance generation is a very, very huge industry  (The Deceit Business).

You should not believe anything you read or hear anywhere, including Dredd Blog, unless it passes muster after you research the material to confirm or deny its veracity.

Otherwise, as Epistemology reveals, our knowledge is nothing more than either faith or trust (The Pillars of Knowledge: Faith and Trust?).

One of the tenets of Agnotology is that ignorance cannot grow without a proper environment of bias, falsehoods, misguided epistemological reliance, and a culture that supports ignorance.

Ignorance in this Agnotology sense is a lack of the knowledge of a subject specifically because of the publication of inaccurate or misleading scientific data.

But more than that, we focus on the ignorance about the scientific data that is available, but is nevertheless ignored for some reason.

The reason for ignoring scientific data can be bias, conflict of interest, psychological denial, and the like.

In cases of nationcide (national suicide), empirecide (empire suicide), societycide (society suicide), or culturecide (culture suicide) a.k.a. omnicide, we have to take a look at historical autopsies of nations, empires, societies, and cultures to deduce the reason for their self-inflicted demise:
"In other words, a society does not ever die 'from natural causes', but always dies from suicide or murder --- and nearly always from the former, as this chapter has shown."
(A Study of History,  by Arnold J. Toynbee, emphasis added). Historian Toynbee used the word "society" in the context of any group --even up to the size of civilization itself.

The study of history sometimes involves the autopsy of a nation, empire, society, or culture -- an autopsy conducted by historians rather than by psychologists.

If we are to analyze this phenomenon of mass suicide together with the psychoanalysis based on that autopsy, we can use some of the pointers that Freud left us:
If the evolution of civilization has such a far reaching similarity with the development of an individual, and if the same methods are employed in both, would not the diagnosis be justified that many systems of civilization——or epochs of it——possibly even the whole of humanity——have become neurotic under the pressure of the civilizing trends? To analytic dissection of these neuroses, therapeutic recommendations might follow which could claim a great practical interest. I would not say that such an attempt to apply psychoanalysis to civilized society would be fanciful or doomed to fruitlessness. But it behooves us to be very careful, not to forget that after all we are dealing only with analogies, and that it is dangerous, not only with men but also with concepts, to drag them out of the region where they originated and have matured. The diagnosis of collective neuroses, moreover, will be confronted by a special difficulty. In the neurosis of an individual we can use as a starting point the contrast presented to us between the patient and his environment which we assume to be normal. No such background as this would be available for any society similarly affected; it would have to be supplied in some other way. And with regard to any therapeutic application of our knowledge, what would be the use of the most acute analysis of social neuroses, since no one possesses power to compel the community to adopt the therapy? In spite of all these difficulties, we may expect that one day someone will venture upon this research into the pathology of civilized communities. [p. 39]
...
Men have brought their powers of subduing the forces of nature
to such a pitch that by using them they could now very easily exterminate one another to the last man. They know this——hence arises a great part of their current unrest, their dejection, their mood of apprehension. [p. 40]
(MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact - 5, quoting "Civilization and Its Discontents", S. Freud, 1929, emphasis added). I doubt that Freud intended that the psychoanalysis (e.g. "Why did the Roman Empire fall?") would be conducted by historians.

But, there is no specialized discipline that I know of in psychiatry that deals with the diagnosis of national behavior via posthumous autopsy, because, current psychiatry tends to be designed only for individual persons:
This study uses the methods and procedures of psychological autopsy to portray the life of an academically gifted college student who completed suicide. The study is unique in that it follows the subject across his 21 years of life, highlighting relevant milestones and significant stages and events. A comprehensive view of the life and death of a gifted student is offered through both researchers' and parents' perspectives, along with multiple theoretical explanations, including a developmental explanation.

This psychological autopsy yielded three sets of findings: those that reflected exclusively on the subject's life, those that compare his life with 3 previous psychological autopsies conducted, and those that reflect the parents' observations and experiences of his life. Two important findings of this study include a depiction of the psychological makeup of a subject in interaction with his environment and the fact that many of the factors contributing to suicidal behavior identified for the general population of adolescents and young adults existed in this case, as well. Consequently, as Cross, Cook, and Dixon (1996) found, certain types of aberrant behavior, belief systems, or both should not be considered a typical part of being a gifted person; they should be recognized as potential indicators of suicidal behavior.
(A Psychological Autopsy, emphasis added). The historian Toynbee did the same thing concerning nations, cultures, societies, and empires which he said had committed "suicide."

As the individual case above shows, even if the person who committed suicide was of the brightest and was exceptional --that does not matter, in terms of who will and who will not commit suicide.
Don't waste time in this Koch book store

What matters is following ignorance that will kill you.

Or not following ignorance in order to say alive.

The exercise is to know what ignorance is and how to avoid it.

All too often our culture or civilization embraces and even worships ignorance (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact).

The video below is an example of official ignorance that is leading people in the direction of cultural suicide (cf. Comparing a Meme Complex to a Cultural Amygdala).

It would not have helped the bright young person mentioned above, who committed suicide, if a psychiatrist had counselled him to "seek a political solution" to his problem.

Nor is a political solution workable for a society that is politically corrupt.

Perhaps there is no solution to what historian Toynbee observed?

Blind Willie McTell News - 4

News Weak Presstitute
This series has dealt with so called journalism (McTell News), the fake journalism plaguing the American public with bread and circuses in place of meaningful information.

In a knee jerk reaction typical of Mocking Bird type yellow journalism, the once upon a time news magazine "Newsweek" has gone off the deep end (which has been parodied by the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver HBO show).

That McTell News magazine should rename itself to "News Weak" ... except that it might be too accurate to print in their now-worn-out rag.

The yellow journalism piece I am talking about is titled "The Plots to Destroy America" which goes on to castigate and libel citizen journalists, researchers, and bloggers by dragging up the old CIA talking point propaganda of yesteryear now known as the "conspiracy theorists" ad hominem illogical tirade.

We traced this talking point back a few years not long ago:
Large numbers of the public did not buy it, then the numbers began to grow intensely as a "conspiracy theory" culture sprang up everywhere.

So, the CIA studied how they could propagandise the situation so as to avoid the scorn of the public.

They came out with CIA Document #1035-960, which became the talking points for those media outlets which the CIA controlled or had influence over (see e.g. Mocking America).

They succeeded in corrupting the meaning of "conspiracy theory" in the eyes of the public, but the pressure mounted until congress appointed a committee that concluded "The committee believes, on the basis of the evidence available to it, that Kennedy was probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy" (United States House Select Committee on Assassinations).
(On The Origin of "Conspiracy Theory" - 4). But when an asset is needy as News Weak of McTell News is, the government will pay for "good press."

Just because conspiracy theorists in the House and Senate advocate that global warming is a hoax, goaded on by Koch Brothers dirty oil money, does not mean that all congressional conspiracy theorists are a "clear and present danger."

Talk about hypeocracy and hypocrisy.

The author of this pathetic News Weak newspeak piece writes what he is paid to write.

The next post in this series is here, the previous post in this series is here.

Interview of "conspiracy theorist" Senator Bob Graham by Real News:
