...Nescio,

Thanks for the big word enlightenment.

When I did this post I put the link to the definition of etiology in it. That website says:

===========================================
"Definition of Etiology

Etiology: The study of the causes. For example, of a disorder.

The word "etiology" is mainly used in medicine, where it is the science that deals with the causes or origin of disease, the factors which produce or predispose toward a certain disease or disorder.

Today in medicine one hears (or reads) that "the etiology is unknown." Translation -- we don't know the cause.

Aetiology is the preferred spelling in some countries, including the UK, whereas "etiology" without an "a" has taken over in the US. The word comes from the Greek "aitia", cause + "logos", discourse."
===========================================

So, I can't tell if your critique is aimed at the medical terms dictionary I used, or at me for using it.

At any rate critique noted. Bloggers can read your comment, the definition, and take note.

Your blog is a good one too, should they want to go there for some more good ideas.Dreddhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15673418865926403671noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039161489041752842.post-21009460945717830942010-02-12T03:39:36.835-06:002010-02-12T03:39:36.835-06:00Just as an obsessive purist (on semantics) your us...Just as an obsessive purist (on semantics) your use of aetiology is somewhat incorrect. Physicians merely use that word to tell each other what caused a certain disorder, i.e. the aetiology of X is Y. When dealing with investigating disease: its causes and influences, doctors will refer to epidemiology (http://www.bmj.com/epidem/epid.html or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiology)

Leaving my silly correction aside, I really like your post and certainly agree with most of it. You may find a similare tone in a comment I made on another topic here: http://contusio-cordis.blogspot.com/2009/11/crank-magnetism.html
"In the anti-vaccination camp they have come down with acute stupid. A serious condition which has no known cure. Resistent to rational thought, and scientific evidence, it is as if those infected are actually suffering from several types of delusional disorder."

And part of the aetiology :) I think may be the inadequate journalistic skills of the media: http://contusio-cordis.blogspot.com/2009/12/media-do-not-check-for-false-reporting.htmlNesciohttp://contusio-cordis.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1039161489041752842.post-86112284635852629082010-02-04T06:38:14.168-06:002010-02-04T06:38:14.168-06:00Anna,
